Important Person Here-- According To Nigerian Scammers

By
Mortgage and Lending with Arizona Wholesale Mortgage Inc.

Look at this email I received today. '

I had no idea I was so important!

Does anybody ever respond to these things...ever? I just can't imagine. I get about 5 or 6 of these per day.  This guy was actually smart enough to put "Att. Karen George" in his email. Most of them just ask that I trust them- even though they don't know my name.

Most of these scammers come from Nigeria, for whatever reason.  Here's a neat site devoted to all of these ridiculous spam-scams that we all get in the mail:  Scam-o-Rama

And if you want to get a laugh, here's the one I got through my ActiveRain profile today.  That's a first!

From: Col. Gaba Lajaja, <--- Wow! A Colonel! I guess I should keep reading Colonel.
Director, Directorate of Military
Intelligent.(D.M.I)

Att: Karen George,

I start by introducing my good self, I am Col. <-- terrible English grammar is always a good sign.
Gaba Lajaja the Director, Directorate of Military Intelligent.
(D.M.I.) I got your contact information through a very good friend
of mine (Business Tycoon) who told me of your good reputation.

However, I did not disclose any thing about
what I want to do with you. <-- More bad English Grammar. Did George W. Bush write this?

In view of his recommendation, I decided to contact you via
email for a mutual and long lasting
relationship I will want this deal that am
about to disclose to you to be kept absolutely
secret. In my Department in the Nigerian Army,
the Federal Government allocated to my
department some amount of money amounting
USD87million for the purchase of some military
equipment, computers and other logistics, but
as the Director/Head of the Department I want
to use this great opportunity to cut out some
amount of money worth USD17million to be
transferred into your company or your personal
account. I hope you understand my point. I
decided to use your account so that it can not
be traced after my retirement.

Meanwhile, the above funds USD17million is
already audited and signed out as used fund
for the purpose it was meant for.
For your involvement in this DEAL I have
mapped out 20% percent of the total sum for
you I will give you other detailed information
on how we will go about the transaction.
Please reply to indicate your interest. For
Confidentiality please contact me on my
personal email address:

Awaiting your prompt response.  <-- Well, since you need me so badly; I'll just go ahead and wait for your response. After all, I am the guy holding all of your Nigerian cards, right? You need me or we'll never become millionaires!

Yours Faithfully,

Col. Gaba Lajaja.

I was just reading an article about a son who gave his aging 80 year old mother her first computer. She fell for this scam and followed through thinking it was her banking institution. Fortunately for her it was caught in time and nothing was lost financially. But could you imagine how many of our friends, family members that are not familiar with working through email that are just learning about the Internet. Be sure to bring them aware of such creeps and evil doing, that is is alive and happening!

Hey Karen,

Take a look at this http://youtube.com/watch?v=MqNqLqoPNA8

It's by Chris Hansen, the reporter on "To Catch a Predator" who nabs all those perverts who try to pick up 13 yr olds on the Internet.  He did a report on this type of Nigerian email scam.  It's pretty damn funny and worth the watch.

Karen - they just get more ridiculous don't they! I actually got a real amusing one a few weeks ago. The women sent me one that looked like she wanted to me to date her :) It was like she was looking at a match.com profile :)

KAREN thank you so much for highlighting this subject.   As usual: I always appreciate the efforts that you make to research and support your subject.

I just recently wrote a post on this very subject Is It My Lucky Day Or What?

What I really appreciate about your post is the helpful link you discovered to get the word out as to how prevalent this practice really is. Some of these communications may seem hilarious; however this is a serious subject. Those that are beckoned can suffer some life changing financial destruction.

The key to these scams working is OUR greed. Be careful out their. It is a cruel world!

I usually delete these, but sometimes, when I'm feeling the need to vent....  I reply.  I'd tell you what I say, but it's not very "lady-like" and I'm pretty sure the words I use are not allowed on AR.  I can tell you that it usually ends with "How stupid do you think we are in this part of the World?"

Karen, these ridiculous emails keep coming at me... It's amazing how many folks will fall for this scheme. 20/20 did an expose a couple of years ago and found some of the people burned in these things were doctors and lawyers. ..can you beieve it?

I listed my father-in-law's home on FSBO sites for him.  We got a reply from a "doctor" in England that wanted to buy the house site unseen.  The only acceptable payment method he would indulge was a bank transfer.

I wonder how these things work.  Why couldn't I just open a dummy account with zero balance and give him all the ABA and routing information he wanted.  What could he possibly get from me?

Karen:

How I wish it was just you and that you really were so important that all this email would come to you and not me. I get so much of this crap. I just forward it to the FBI, who knows what they do with it. I do occasionally tell the sender where I sent their email. That usually stops it for a while.
