We took the Road to Hana today; I’ve got way to many photos to share. This photo was taken from above Black Sand Beach, there really is black sand! The sand comes from years of pounding water on the lava shores on the west coast of Maui.
The water falls, plants, views and a drive to “another world” is well worth trip around the island.
Tom, Beautiful shot! Hawaii isn't someplace we've made it to (yet!). Have always heard great things and the scenery is just awesome.

I don't recall the black sand on Maui. And I thought I knew that island pretty well. I certainly remember the black sands at Kalapana on the Big Island though. However, I understand that area has changed over the years from lava flows subsequent to my visits.
Tom, We loved our trip down the road to Hana! What a beautiful drive! I love your photos of the black sand beaches! Enjoy Maui, it is a beautiful island!

I think the black sand is pulvarized lava.
Tony, that trip was incredible. I got to get the pictures and video off the video camera (gotta get home for that) to post about the flash flood experience.
