Hello, John Q. Consumer. Welcome to our world.

So, pull up a chair and let's talk about the consumer on ActiveRain. As many of you may already know, the consumer has arrived. They are reading and they are commenting on our posts. I personally have several that are regular readers and participants on my posts and it is a wonderful thing. It's one of the reasons we are here. This is not a passing trend and as time goes by it will be happening more and more. When you check to see whose logged on, on any given day, there are usually a couple of hundred non-members reading. Now I believe the majority of these are just members that may not be signed in and are just lurking BUT you can be sure there, are many that are consumers, checking us out.

So, with that in mind, we must welcome them. I have seen quite a few instances, over the last few weeks, where a consumer commented on a post only to get slammed by other members. Why? Why would you do that? This is a site where the consumer should be welcomed, with open arms, and brought into our world, where we can teach them and show them that we are professional and that we can handle the tough questions. In fact not only should we handle the tough questions, we should welcome them. This is our opportunity to shine. Not to be defensive and slam them because we disagree with what they say, or how they say it. My Grandma used to tell me to mind my Ps and Qs. Whatever the heck that means.

The consumers, that have showed up my Blog, have normally started out with major attitudes, towards us and our profession. So what? If I had to deal with most of the so called "professionals" out there, I too, would have a major attitude. It's our job to turn them around. I have done so 100% of the time. They become my E-mail buddies, my friends and possibly future customer/clients. My goal, is to help them anyway I can, to understand what it is we do and to change their negative opinion of our profession. If you don't think that can happen, then read the comments on this post with CandyBags or this post discussing Range Pricing or this one, where we are having a great discussion about how we charge for our services. These are all perfect examples of turning the consumer around. They now have a totally different attitude towards our profession. Remember in our business, everyone is a consumer.

Toby Boyce, wrote about this same issue, a while back. I couldn't find the post where he had the nasty comments to a consumer, from another member. I think he may have deleted it.

Anyway, the point is, we have an excellent opportunity here on ActiveRain to make a difference. We can change the consumer's perspective of our industry. We can educate them on what we do. And most importantly, we can build value for our services.

So please, watch what you say and watch who you say it to. Disagree, debate, have heated discussions but respect the person, always. You never know who's watching.

This post goes out to the consumers, my friends, CandyBags, Stan, Mikey, Mark Nadel, Ryan, John R., TaylorMA, NYCJanet, L. Raymond and all the others who are reading, learning and commenting. Welcome to my Blog. Pull up a seat and sit a spell. All of your comments, opinions and frustrations are welcome on my Blog, at anytime. How may I help you?

Maybe, we can learn something from each other. Maybe, we will all be better people from our discourse. Let's do our best to understand each other.

Hello, John Q. Consumer. Welcome to our world.

Bryant -

You are absolutely right - there is nothing wrong with debate. Debate is where communication and education happen.  There is no reason anyone over the age of 7 can't debate and keep it civil and constructive.  I've found that those people who get defensive and destructive are the ones who are not too comfortable and probably not too secure in the first place.

I just saw a friend of mine - an investor - out, and am going to send him here to AR.  I told him he would learn some, and get a lot of insight to the RE industry...

I am fairly new to AR and I believe the Candybags post was practically the first one I read.  I was horrified and frustrated by it because no one was addressing his questions.  Since then I have been acutely aware that these posts are meant to be read by consumers too.  My plan is to start blogging in 2007 and I plan to engage and inform the consumer.

Debi. I like your plan. :) "engage and inform the consumer" Just think how we could change the nature of our image if everyone did that and did it without an attitude. SVW...TLW...ROAR!

We welcome the consumer and hope they will find this network a great source of information.  I know the consumer is here, just today a friend told me he reads my post.

You need to welcome the consumer for sure. They are here and they are reading. In Charles' post Are your profiles working for you? he says that there have been multile clients that have read their posts before choosing Jacqui as their agent. BTW, that is a great post by Charles that got missed by most people IMO.

Fabulous post! You are right - the consumer arriving is a wonderful thing!  And the comments here show that the Rainers get it.  Your blog should be mandatory reading for new members.

I just finished reading the bloodhound post.  All I can say is WOW! While I found Candybags to be absolutely toxic, I cannot believe the way our profession represented themselves.  BB & TLW, you get a gold star.  You were the water on the fire, congrats.

Hi BB,

I too have always followed my Mother's words of wisdom!  Treat others how you would like to be treated.  My husband and I are very mindful of how we treat our customers, clients and colleagues and always try to be professional.  Active Rain has been a wonderful experience and we are excited about the public finding us here.  We look forward to hearing questions and comments from the public.  That's what we're here for after all - to help others!

gold starTLW & BB.. I've decided I needed my own Gold Star graphic to hand out when it was deserved. I have to second Laurie Manny. For those who have not gone and read the entire Bloghound post, I encourage you to do so. Don't skip any comments, it must be read in whole to truly appreciate what BB and TLW did to turn the tide and make difference.

It's worth the time.

I agree...so why was the person (potential client) slammed by the author of the blog for commenting on the "People in Photos" blog?

The standard has to be raised in here...it WAS higher at one point.... The consumers will just see it as a glorified agents only club if it sinks lower and lower in here.....

BB,

Once again, great post which is pretty much the norm. Lots of great comments. Obviously, each of us (AR's ) has our personal reasons for being a part of this great community. Most of these reasons are a common thread that we all share. One of my reasons, among many, is the search for new ideas or perspectives for personal as well as professional growth.  Looking for something that adds to my knowledge base and provokes thought in an area that I have never pondered or given much thought to.

Your posts accomplish this quite often as a stand alone post, however your posts are a catalyst that serves to cause some great minds to share their wealth of knowledge.  Consumers are our life blood. They have virtually have every right in this community as we do. Their opinions and perspectives serve to shape everything that we do and they must know and understand that what is important to them will be important to us.

One important thing that provoked my deeper thought was the comment by Tim Maitski..."The Internet Never Forgets." Sticks and stones may break my bones but.....words..............Best be careful!

Tim....thanks for your 2 cents worth!

"Real-A-Jeff aka Jeff Turner"....WOW. Another star. Cool. Thank you so much for speaking up and suggesting people READ it. It is a perfect example of what Professionals should do in a situation like that. I know you saw the other Professionals on that post go off the deep end. It is our standard of practice not to do that when it comes to an upset irate Consumer. Going on the defensive does not solve the problem. Patience and a cool head solve the problem not insults. Rising above insults and addressing the problem is what makes a Professional successful. :)

"Laurie"...I don't know about any of that either. I do know that we are not responsible for other people's actions. All we can do is try to help in situations where we find ourselves in a position to do so. It is obvious to me by the comments on this post that a majority of AR Members want to put their best foot forward when it comes to dealing with Consumers. La La La La. :)

"Ron"...I liked Tim's observation too. :)

"Laurie"...I have again gone back to the photo post and have seen nothing more than a few differences of opinions. You were looking at the right post. It does not appear anyone has been slammed. Everyone has been very polite in voicing their opinions. The point of the post is whether or not MLS's should restrict our photos in our listings. The written word can be tricky sometimes. I believe some folks didn't catch the idea that controversy and Blogging go hand in hand. Controversy generates activity on a Blog Post. That is what Blogging is all about. There is nothing wrong with everyone having an opinion. That is what makes life interesting. :) TLW...ROAR!
