I wish this was an April Fool's Day joke, but it's not. March 2012 goes in the record books as the wettest in history in the Portland-Vancouver area, breaking the old record set in 1957. It is possible there were wetter months prior to the official logs which were started in 1940, nonetheless rainfall totals were impressive.
Portland-Vancouver topped a record 7.52 inches of rain for March 2012, with 7.72 inches recorded at Portland International Airport. The metro-area also finished the month with 29 days of measurable rainfall, breaking the old record of 27 days. In addition, 23 consecutive days of rain shattered the old record of 16 days.
March 2012 will also be remembered for its late snow accumulations in the Willamette valley. On the 22nd, measurable snowfall was recorded at the airport - the latest in record-keeping history. Eight inches of record snowfall fell during the month along the Oregon coastline, with a huge storm that brought as much as 9" of snow in the Eugene, Oregon area.
Despite the unseasonably cool and wet weather in the Portland -Vancouver area, spring flowers are still waking from their winter's sleep. Yesterday, March 31st, the rain let up in the afternoon and gave me a few hours to get outside and visit the garden. Here's proof that Spring really has arrived! Regardless, if there's not more sun and warmer temps in our near future, I'm going to need an April escape!
