Will the new IPAD help my real estate business?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams - SD Metro

Will the new IPAD help my real estate business?  After lugging my laptop around for years, I decided it was time to look into a tablet.  But, if you know me, I never just go out and spend money. I have to really think I need it and then I ask a lot of people for their opinion.  It drives some people close to me crazy sometimes, but to know me is to love me!

So here are the ways that I thought it would be beneficial to me as a real estate agent :

1.  Blogs: here I am sitting on my couch and writing my first blog on it.  I look forward to being able to take it anywhere and sitting down and writing a blog wherever and whenever the moods strikes me!

2.  Pictures:  this thing has an amazing camera!  I have already taken a couple of pictures and the quality is much better than on my camera!  And I don't have to load a memory stick, email it to myself or sync it . . .. It's all right here!  That is super convenient!

3.  Videos:  We all know that videos are fast becoming the best way to communicate with our clients.  I am extremely shy, so I have to work on this, but I am looking forward to shooting videos and then being able to send them out at just a few clicks of a button!

4.  Last, but probably most important is  NOT using so much paper!  I am personally astounded at how much paper there is in real estate!  So I am looking forward to doing more presentations on my new IPAD and looking

for more ways to cut down on the paper usage.

Having said all of that, let me just say that this is the first Apple product that I have owned.  That was very amusing to the salesman at the Apple store in Fashion Valley, where I bought it.  He, as my friend that was with me, thought it was hilarious a that I have been so reluctant to make the switch.  It is not that I don't like Apple, but I have always owned a PC and I am a pretty comfortable with them.  I have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, I learned computers in a PC environment and am pretty comfortable in the PC world.  So when I decided to get a tablet I was nervous about the leap into Appledom.

But I did it and I enjoyed getting to know it yesterday, now it's time to work.  As I sit here typing this out, I am not completely sold on the onscreen keyboard, but that may just take some getting used to.  But I didn't really get that I can't watch some videos. Apparently we should be Making our videos in HTML5, ok that's a whole other blog.

So .... Will the new IPAD help my real estate business?  I think so.

Hi Maggie. Just read your post on my IPad2 I bought last November. Like you, it was my first Apple product and am EXTREMELY impressed... I can cuddle up to it while watching TV, surf the net, do a little research, and it is also an incredible game machine. If you have kids, be prepared to fight for time on it! Thanks for writing, Ken

Maggie, I've been going back and forth a LOT lately about getting an iPad vs getting a laptop. iPad has won and I will be purchasing in the next few days.

Maggie, you can do a lot more than this on an IPad.  It's a great way to do listing presentations, to orgainize showing tours and lots of other stuff.  I still haven't figured out how to upload photos to my blog.

Thanks Maggie but I'm not sold yet. I'll wait for your follow up stories to see if you have converted to only using the IPAD or to learn that you have to have both to meet all of your computing needs. Best of luck.

Maggie, I owned an iMac and an iPhone before purchasing my iPad. But I have since let my daughter have my iPhone as I don't see the need for both an iPad and an iPhone. I love my iPad and I take it with me everywhere. It is so handy. I no longer print out the MLS sheets. I just pull up the info on my iPad and use that. My clients love it. Then I email them the properties that the liked the best. This has so many uses for my business. The best purchase I've ever made.

I too, been wondering about the IPAD. I just recently bought one and still learning how to use it. It's a bit complicated but I defined it as a another expensive toy.

Maggie, Great post and congrats on the featured! Well deserved! I manage technology for a company north of Omaha, and I got tired of cleaning viruses and replacing laptops, so I set all the travelers in the company up on Ipads, and they love them! I am (of course) commenting on your post using mine.. Have a great evening!

Hi Maggie, thanks for sharing reflections on your new tool, I am glad that you like it.  After doing a lot of research this past year and finally settled on the Acer iconia tablet, the Ipad like all apple products was just too expensive when compared to comparable tablets it seemed to be about twice the price.

Although the androids to have a wealth of apps, I do sometimes regret when I read about a cool app for the ipad and wish I could try it.

I love my iPad. As a matter if fact, I am using it to comment on your post. I still can not get a photo in a blog with mine. Anyone know how to do that?!

The new iPad, very much like the previous two models, are very much a part of the "ecosystem" Apple has built that not only centers on computers any longer, or even similar devices such as smartphones and tablets, but software and media sales.  To best be appeciated, an iPad would (ideally) be deployed alongside iPhones (which is being seen more and more often) and Macintosh-based laptops/desktops (not as often seen because of the still-existing software gap between Windows and Mac OS X), and your home will be hooked up to an Apple TV set full of music, movies, and TV shows you purchased from iTunes running on an Apple-based hardware network.

That aside--an iPad makes a compelling purchase argument on its own.  Like Windows on the desktop, the apps are (on the tablet front) on the iPad.  Android does a pretty good job of competing as a smartphone platform but that's another story.  The "light" software and fast hard-drive makes the iPad much faster at some of the most fundamental things people do on computers--professionals and consumers alike (and as the next version of Windows will be seen on tablets competing with the iPad before the end of the year, I would be shocked if what comes to be the "iPad 4" doesn't have more and more software and/or hardware accessories that allow it to be a true laptop replacment for most circumstances).

Maggie, I had to come back and ask how, or why, you don't have an iPhone? What are you using? I couldn't imagine doing business without my iPhone, and now I'm gonna get the iPad. I've talked to a boatload of people and I can't wait!

Thank you all so much for sharing! I have learned so much from your comments, I have even had some of the old "Pros" in the office saying "Wow! I didn't know that, where did you learn that?". I am most impressed with the business app for Craigslist! I will never be able to look at Craigslist on my PC again! I think my Android phone is starting to get worried!
