Early Bloomers for Denver to Boulder Gardens

By
Real Estate Agent with The DiGiorgio Group

Just a few days ago, it was nearly 70 degrees here in Arvada* Colorado and I got a little gardening done in my Pomona Lakes backyard.

While giddily playing in the gardens, I stumbled across the first bloom of the season – a Lenten rose blooming way before Lent!

Since then, we've had a BUNCH of snow!  Here’s where that lovely bloom was – and really, where she still is.

arvada homes, gardening in colorado, early bloomers
There are a lot of plants that won’t grow here, but many early bloomers do quite well.I’ve planted a lot of early bloomers, because I’m always so eager for spring. Here’s a few I recommend for high country gardens:

Glory of the Snow

Snow Crocus

Snowdrops

Siberian Squill

Winter Aconite

Lenten Rose

Crested Iris

When buying perennial plants, bulbs, or seeds for your high country gardens, be sure they will do well in your zone.  The Denver area is Zone 5, with some dips into Zone 4.

Luckily, when it gets cold we usually also get a nice blanket of snow to help protect the plants. I can’t wait until our current ‘blanket’ melts, because the moisture usually encourages more bloomers to poke up their heads!

Joetta: It always amazed me when I saw flowers peeking out from the snow. And it always lifts the spirit when the first ones come out. We rarely have any snow here, but it can get cold at night. I see my grape vine starting to show signs of life, and my roses are growing like mad. It will be a great spring!

From gardening to shoveling snow....sounds like fun! (Not really. Warm weather is my preference.)
