Now Showing...Delta, Colorado's Historic Egyptian Theatre

By

Now showing...Delta, Colorado's Historic Egyptian Theatre. With it's Main Street location among the more standard architecture, the Egyptian Theatre will get your attention. It's still in use today as a theatre and the building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Delta, Colorado's Historic Egyptian TheaterDelta, Colorado's Historic Egyptian Theatre first opened in 1928. It was designed by Montana Fallis who used the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt as a model for the building. This type of thematically deisgned cinema was popular during this time period. Delta, Colorado's Historic Egyptian Theater was also a part of "bank" night. In the 1930s when theater buisness was slow, 20th Century Fox regional representative, Charles Yeager, started a promo to give away $30 a week to one lucky theater visitor. This helped increase business and the idea really caught on and eventually more than 4000 cinemas nationwide were taking part.

Sadly the old building was neglected. In 1996 it was restored and reopened for business in 1997. In 2009 it was updated again to accommodate the new 3D technology. The theater is on the Colorado State Register of Historic Places and the National Historic Register.

Hi Debbie, Looks like a wonderful building.  Glad it was restored instead of torn down.  Was the interior restored to its original state?

Hi, Laura...they do show the new movies. I get a good feeling in this theater. I most recently saw The Hunger Games at the Egyptian Theater.

Hi, Gloria...it was restored to it's original state. I did quite a big of research on this theater before I wrote this blog. I really learned a lot about it's history.

I love historical theathers. Most of the owners will not let you go in and just walk into EVERY room. This is what I like to do.

Hi, Sussie...this place is great. The next time I'm there for a movie, I'll take interior pics.

Hi, John, and thanks for stopping by. I didn't know why this building looked so out of place on Main Street until I did the research for this blog.

Thanks for the link!  I love that place, and your history-telling.  Often, when I'm in historic theaters I'm actually disappointed when the lights go down to start the movie, because I can't see the incredible decor anymore.

Hi, Joetta...I don't normally go to the movies that often, but now I know why our theater looks the way it does. I'm going to get interior pictures next time I'm there.

Debbie, Your localism blogging is great!  This is another venue I have not been to since I moved here in 2003.  Shame on me for not taking advantage of all the wonderful places here in Delta County.  Maybe we can get together and see a movie as a girls night out!  Sounds like a great idea to me!
