That was probably the most interesting home inspection I've ever attended.

The definition of "adventure" is a home inspection with Jay Markanich.

No, I'm not exercised by spiders and snakes.  The spider, a very large one, has been dispatched.  I'll gladly "dispatch" the snake too.  Of course he'll have to be lured into the open so the cellar won't be all bloodied.  Dispatching a very large snake requires the implementation of that 12 gauge from the cargo area of my 4Runner.

The owners, either the sellers or buyers, simply need to take the time to find the pathway the snake uses to enter and exit and seal it well.

We did see mice traps set outside, but clearly that snake is well fed and I suspect that the snake's main entre' is mice.

I knew he was there.  Evidence of him was all over this cellar.

Julius Squeezer.

Either this guy had discarded a lot of previous, very fine, suits, or he was living with a lot of cousins.  Skins were everywhere!

And his presence was not unexpected!  This home is a very nice, century-old Victorian, with a lot of original touches and many additions.  There is a large cellar, exactly as you would imagine, with a stone foundation and dirt floor.

The house sits on 6 quiet, mostly-rural acres.  It's a beautiful setting with outbuildings and a stable.  The buyers have horses, so they were looking for this kind of house.  While there two different deer sauntered by, so we were out of town!

The Realtor said that she heard this is a Sears Catalog home.  Until then I had always thought of the Sears homes as craftsman style, and smaller.  But looking it up I found that during the early part of the 20th century Sears sold many Victorian-style homes.

After I snapped the photo, a little head popped up!  Look closely at the photo above and you can see something dark in the upper-right corner.

Big Juli moved warily, smelling me frequently.

But he posed for a nice profile photo!

I guess he was 6 to 8' in length.  This is his domain.  He has the run of the place and has access to areas I could only see, or imagine.

And given the numbers of suits laying about, he is well fed!

I called for the Realtor who wasn't fazed.  She showed no excitement until a big spider showed up, nearly 3" from toe to toe.

She did him in with no doubt of his demise!  "My client hates spiders!"  The buyers were not present, so Lenn demonstrated true agency!

My recommendation:  most people would react viscerally to the presence of a snake, or snakes, on site.  In this case, it/they probably keep the mice to a minimum!  Most, however, would prefer that the snakes keep to themselves in the cellar!  Obviously Julius Squeezer is a happy boy.

Good morning Lenn,

As I mentioned on Jay's post, it was very accommodating of Julius Squeezer to allow you into his home for an inspection!

Sounds like you have a top notch home inspector there.

If there are in fact mice, I think I'd prefer a cat to to a snake.

Jay to the rescue or close to it...anyway, i beat feet when i see 6 ft. snakes or longer...agree they are great to control the vermin population but not in my home, Lenn!

I spoke with the buyer on the phone and suggested the image of Lenn saying "PULL!" and having that snake flung across a field for her to pluck out of the air with her shot gun!

And Debbie, mice are best gotten BEFORE they get into the house...  Big Juli was obviously a pro!  He's a big boy!

Thanks for the reblog Lenn.  I told my wife that this was the second inspection in a row with you where there were no clients present and not to think anything of it...

She smiled, by the way.

I'd be okay with the snake knowing he might be keeping the mice away.  But like you I'd have dispatched the spider...after Jay had peeled me down from the ceiling :-)

Lisa.  Indeed.  In fact, he appeared to be so "comfortable" there, I almost felt like an intruder.

Debbie.  HA!  Spot on.

Ginny.  I prefer that the snakes leave.

Jay.  That inspection was a true adventure.  Since we saw the mouse traps outside, clearly they aren't working.  I suspect that the pest control company isn't "servicing" them properly.  I have the same type of traps at my house and I've been mouse free for 3 years.

Cindy.  HA!  Keep cool.  They are all harmless, just nuisances that have to be "dispatched".

Lenn,

That is weird wild stuff... maybe the buyers can adopt him as a pet!

Have a great day

Rob.  Given the choice, I'd take the snake over mice.

Lenn, Been there, done that, don't ever want to do it again. Snakes in the house. Absolutely not! CATS! Think cats. There are so many in homeless shelters or left abandoned on the street, ADOPT ONE. Not only will they take care of the mice, just for some food and water, they will take care of many other pain in the butt rodents too.

Don't like spiders.... Don't like snakes... Don't like doing inspections on houses with crawl spaces for just that reason, LOL. I'm glad there are very few of them here in Florida. Yikes!

Frankly I'm not much on snakes especially in a basement and as far as I'm concerned the only good spider is a dead one.

Bobbie.  I'm not included to take on a dependant to control mice.  I'm more inclined to us the services of a pest control company that knows what they're doing.

Fred.  HA!  Don't like having to shcek my shoes for Scorpions.

Jeanne.  I got rid of the spider only because my buyer hates them.  Otherwise, I'd have let him live his life our or be food for the snake.

Lenn - Quentin, my pet tarantula, is very distressed at your attitude and asks me to remind you that she and her kind contribute greatly to the control of insects and other annoying pests. She can't help the way she looks and justs wants to be left alone to do her job. She is mute on the subject of snakes.

Charlie.  HA!  That was clear from the mice traps around the house (none were baited by the way).
