New roof venting installed incorrectly.

New roof venting installed incorrectly.

It seems every time I go to a home that claims they just has a new roof put on I cringe.

It never fails to amaze me how much stuff is done incorrectly.

From boots for standpipes to venting installs to no vents installed.

And these are from a licensed contractors too. This roof was installed about one year ago.

Are these roof never inspected by the Building trades inspectors. By the way these installs look I would think not.

Turbin vent accross framing in attic..

Take a look at this one vent here. At least the hole was about the right size.

Codes here say you cannot block a vent from 100% operation. And that means you cannot install a vent over top a roof truss.

There were three of the vents that were installed wrong.

Then on the roof I found two of the three stand pipes that did'nt even have a boot on them.

No boot on 3" standpipe

This 3" standpipe did not have a new boot installed when the roof was installed.

2" standpipe without a boot installed.

You wuld think that if you as a home owner had a new roof installed. Then the new roof should have been installed correctly.

But don't assume anything. Have a new roof install inspected fro a proper install. Then write the check.

Have a great evening everyone.

Clint - It does seem there are a lot of problems w/ roofs.  I bet part of is that they are so high that the homeowner never checks things themselves either.  It's sad that inspectors may be needed just to verity that these guys did this work right.

Hi Clint.  That is so sad.  Boots are so cheap and easy to install.

Clint - I see many missing boots in home inspectors reports. Amazing how leaks don't show up on these things.

Hi Donald,

What's "QC" ?

Very few builders have a QC program. Usually it's the foreman or owner who looks and a lot of times they don't even look at most of the work. They wan to get done and move on to the next home as soon as possible. Time is money.

Have a good day and thanks for the comment.

Hi Debbie,

I always recommend an inspection. If the company tat did the roof is good, then they will welcome an inspector to "take a look". After that and it passes. The homeowner can write the final check.

Have a good day in New Jersey.

Hi Wayne,

I would think the transition to roofer from being a politician would be an easy one. You could stand on the roof and still think you above everyone else. LOL

Have a nice day in Fort Myers, Florida.

Hi Conrad,

I can hear them say this. Worker "Hey boss, we need a couple of boots for these standpipes".

Boss. "we don't have any left, just caulk it"

Worker. That'll work for me". Shrugs and moves on for the caulking.

Then the roof is never completed properly.

Have a good day in Webster, Ma.

Hello Mr. Bond.

I just shake my head and add it to the report. Which in some cases can get quite lengthy with all the missteps by contractors.

Have a good day in Fairport Harbor.

No, not any duct tape on this roof job, but wait till I get a look at the next home. I'm sure Uncle Bob has been there. LOL

Have a good day on the links today.

Hi Toni,

There are leaks. But they are minor ones. the water usually runs down the pipe for the most part.

You don't even want that to happen. Even if it's a very small leak, it can still cause a lot of damage over time.

Have a good day in Newport Richey, Florida.

Good morning Clint. Amazing what makes it past the building inspector. Sometimes I think he figures if it's a licensed builder he can cruise through the inspection but as your pictures show NOT ALWAYS. lol When it comes to vent stack: give a hoot and use a boot.

Hi Al,

You have that right. The inspectors employed by the city, county and State should take notes from this one.

Hi Randy,

Not many of the construction projects ever get inspected. Most never get a permit and then the inspector will not know it even happened. Thus no inspection.

Have a good day in Big Rapids.
