Would you have said yes to this connection request?

A few minutes ago my mailbox delivered a connection request. I'm always a little bit pleased when that happens, but also a little bit leery.

What if I said yes to a connection with someone whose line of business would cast a suspicious light on my own business? You know, like some of those phony "get rich quick" people.

So, as is my habit when I don't recognize the name as someone I've "met question marksbefore" (like here on Active Rain), I check the profile to see who this is and what they do before I say yes. And that's why I deleted today's request without accepting it.

This man may be a very nice person. But all I could learn about him was that he lives in the Greater New York area. That's all, except for the fact that he has 9 connections. His profile didn't offer anything more.

I don't think being on LinkedIn is going to benefit him much - unless he takes the time to finish that profile page before he invites others to connect with him.

Even with 900 connections, if no one knows what he has to offer the marketplace, they can't send him business!

I agree 100%.  There's something to be said for a bit of caution, even on linkedin.  Good reminder for everyone!

Dan - It's kinda sad. Someone needs to tell this man to finish his profile and let people know who he is - or there's no sense in even being there.

Marte, I agree, if I can't tell who you are or what you do from your profile then I'm certainly not going to accept a link to you and you've just wasted my time and yours.

Nancy - Yes, it was a waste of his time to start the profile - and a bigger waste to try to connect with people before it was finished.

If he's real, he's lazy. There have been lots of LI requests that I ignored. Many are loan officers that I've never hear of, don't know anyone that has used them before, we've never met, so why are you sneding me LI and fb friend requets? Seems strange to me.

Marte, I only accept from known sources and acquaintances. If they think I am stuck up I am sorry. I like to know who I will be doing business with.

Jeff - Perhaps because you have connections in common?

Debbie - That's pretty much how I feel about it. It really startles me when someone I don't know writes and asks for a recommendation. Darned if I'll recommend anyone when I don't know a thing about how they do business.

It seems to me that if you want to connect with someone new it would be good to first have your profile completed, then write a note with the request. You could say "You and I are both friends with Joe Smith. Since he likes you, I know I would too..." Or something along those lines.
