Those Bears in Your Backyard are not like Yogi.....Be Careful

For most of us, we hear the stories about the bears and the cubs coming down from the hillsides or forest. Recently, on TV we are hearing more about bears walking through the backyards and knocking the trash cans over and causing a lot of damage and destruction. Plus all the small pets are at risk of being hurt or worse.

Those Bears in Your Backyard are not like Yogi.....Be Careful

Keep your trash cans put up and covered with locking lids. Most of the bears are looking for food as it has been very dry and there is a shortage. Keep your doors closed as a thin screen door will not keep a huge bear out and lately they have been trying to get into homes.

One bear in LA County, now named Meatballs, went inside a home and got meatballs out of the refrigerator and was seen leaving the house carrying the bag and eating them. The homeowner had come home and saw him in her house so luckily she did not go inside. The Sheriff's Dept. and Animal Control tranquilized the bear and tagged him for any future incidents. Well Meatball just could not stay away and after 5 times in that same neighborhood, he was moved to San Diego and is in a shelter waiting to hear where his next destination might be.

Those Bears in Your Backyard are not like Yogi

If you hear something, probably better to stay inside. If you see a bear nearby, stay inside and call the Police or Sheriff's Department. Be sure to keep your pets inside in the early morning and at night.

If you see a cub, do not approach them as you can bet mother bear is nearby.

If your dog is outside and the bear shows up, call your dog to come in but do not go outside and put yourself in peril.

Bears in the foothills are not like Yogi

These bears are not nice like Yogi Bear was. They can be mean and deadly at times.

Warning: If you are confronted with a bear....do not run as the bear can outrun you by about 40 MPH and can climb trees too. Back away slowly, and try not to look him in the eye. If you see a big rock or something larger, grab it and continue to walk away slowly. If the bear charges you, right

Hi Mark,

You are so right and I think most people know the backyard bears are not the sweet little Yogi Bear we all see on TV but there are always fools who think the little cubs are cute or they want to take a picture with their phone so they need to get closer. Have a great weekend.

Good advice re what to do in a bear encounter...and to making sure we don't encourage their local foraging.   We're part of the problem!

Hi Dick,

Here in California we have sitings almost daily near the foothills. I am told they are hungry and are looking for food when they come in the backyards. Homeowners have to keep a locking lid on their cans and they can only be put out just before pickup time  It is sad that the poor animals are hungry. They speculate conditions that have killed off trees and shrubs are drought condition and fires. The bears need to store up before they can go off to hibernate. You are lucky if you only have a couple as we have many in the LA area and I am sure also in the mountains.

Hi Li,

Yes I bet you have bears nearby in your area. My very first bear siting was in the Yukon of course that is far north of you but it was so exciting but we stayed far away and the bear was munching on berries down in a gully.

Don't think I would want to play with that bear.  They can kill you with one scipe of their claw.

Hi Edward and Celia,

Exactly but there are people who think they are so cute. They do not realize they can run 40 mph so no way to outrun them. Leave the removal to the experts and call 911 as this is an emergency situation.

Those are great shots. We have been to Colorado 3 years in a row and so far, no bear shots. I would love to get some, I just don't want to be up close and personal! HA!

Good advice for those that have wild visitors.  It is best not to take chances with any wild animal.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Enjoy the colors of autumn with your camera in hand.

Hi Joni,

I go to Alaska and it is hard to get them there...imagine that. They stay hidden and like to prowl at night in the trash cans and sometimes go swimming in the pools.

Hi Roy,

You are so right as you never know what a wild animal will do. I stay away from coyotes when walking my dogs so I wait until it has been light over 1 hr in the morning and 1 hr before dark.

Interesting looking bears with the different colors on them. I always thought they were one color all over!  Now that I look closer I think it's the same bear in all the pictures.  Good job!  So glad I don't have to worry about bears.

I hate to say it, Kristen; but that is really a cute looking bear.  That top photo makes me want to go up and just scrunch and rub his ears. . .BUT, I dare not:-)

Hi Georgina,

The big front shot is one bear and his/her friend is the other one in two pictures going after the trash and standing in the grass. I wish I had some cub pictures but maybe soon. We have black bears around here mostly as they are trying to keep the grizzly bears from breeding with the black ones as it will make them meaner and more agressive. Might have some grizzly bears in LA county but not sure.

Hi Myrl,

I know exactly what you mean. He is so cute and love the brown face. The ones I cannot resist are the Panda bears as I think they just look like a big ball of fluff. It is so hard to believe they are mean with strangers but they are just wild bears so go figure.

Hi Yolanda,

That is a great question and yes you are right as it puts the animal on defense and more likely to take you on. This is true with all wild life critters; mountain lions, leopards, and other dangerous animals out there. It is fun to see them but not fun to be their target.
