My Kidney Found its Home With Barbara
My Kidney donation to Barbara, my sister-in-law was a huge success! I went into sugery on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. It only took 2 hours to extract my left kidney. Meanwhile Barbara went into surgery at 9:00 a.m. and it took 3 hours to attach my kidney, which instantly started to produce healthy urine.
Later that night, with the help of my husband, I was able to get up and walk down the hall to Barbara’s room. We were both so grateful all the tests, all the waiting and now the surgery was behind us and Barbara could look forward to a healthy, happy, long life! We smiled at each other through tears at the miracle God had given us.
We have so much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. It’s still amazing to me that my kidney is now functioning in Barbara’s body, cleaning all her blood restoring her back to health that she hasn’t had in 10 years! The doctor’s said they couldn’t have asked for better results….from both of us. I was able to go home the next day. Barbara came home a few days after me, once she could tolerate the anti-rejection medication in tablet form.
I can’t even begin to describe the feeling of saving someone’s life. My hope is that people will become educated on how safe and relatively easy it is to donate a kidney to someone in need. There are over 100,000 people waiting on dialysis for a cadaver’s kidney. What they endure is horrific. There are very few live donors, less than 10%. Today is day 6 and I am walking around with relative ease.
PLEASE take a minute to view this profound video of Emily, a lovely woman who had to endure dialysis for 4 ½ years before she finally found a match. I am so grateful that I could take one person waiting desperately for a kidney off the list.
