Preparing for the Holidays - Decide to be Polite to Everyone

After shopping for items to prepare a simple Thanksgiving brunch yesterday, I have to say that if I do not leave my house again until after Christmas that would be okay with me.

The traffic is horrific; parking lots are full; and people are behaving badly.

The Holiday Season is HERE!

I saw no one stop for pedestrians. I stopped to let people cross the roadway with their shopping carts and cars behind me were honking at me.

Grocery clerks were pushing people through the the checkout even though there was no real waiting in the line. The lady in front of me at Whole Foods was so flustered by the clerk she started to walk away without her wallet. I was patiently waiting for her to gather her belongings and put her bags into her cart thinking that she would come back around and get her wallet.

When the clerk started to ring my few items I stopped her advising that I was not ready because the lady in front of me was not finished. I then grabbed the wallet and gave it to the lady. If you could have seen the look on her face ... all I could say was "It's easy to get distracted during the hustle of the holiday season ... especially when we are being rushed through checkout."

I think that it is rude to rush people especially the elderly who tend to move a little slower and need a little more time. I also feel that it is poor customer service to rush people. It shows no respect or consideration. Everybody gets their turn.

Slow down and enjoy every moment of the holiday season.

Decide to be polite to everyone - even if they are not being polite to you. Spread joy this holiday season and be grateful.

Breathe - always remember to breathe ... we tend to hold our breath when we feel stressed.

Enjoy this holiday season. It won't be long before we will be preparing to file our tax returns which is a much better time to hold our breath.

Great reminder to us all to slow down and be more considerate while we rush through our busy schedules.

Kathleen, I was just commenting on this yesterday. Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of, but we must remember to slow down and enjoy the moment...especially during the wonderful holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Kathleen - Holiday is upon us. We all should remember what is the significance of the Holidays. It is to be thankful for our family, friends, neighbors and community. So spread the cheers of well wishes. In the hustle of shopping and running around...courtesy, patience, caring and just a plain Smile will go a long way. Happy Holidays!

Excellent reminder for all of us and a wonderful memory for me.  A friends Mom thought the words to this song were "looking for fun and Phil and Rudy".....................I'm still looking for Phil and Rudy!

Lawrence, I think it is a mindset. I'm one to avoid crowds and long lines at all cost.

Jeff,  Our busy lives become even busier during the holidays.  It is easy to get lost in all of it.

Doris,  Good point ... we need to remember this all year long.  The holidays can bring out the worst in people ... causing them to do things they normally would not do.

Sarah & Les,  A smile is good energy.  Even a fake smile creates good feelings ... the mind does not know the smile is fake. People receiving smiles are likely to give them. It can be contagious!  How wonderful would that be?

Li, That song immediately came to my mind as people were honking at me.

Mr. Shaken,  I'm still laughing at "looking for fun and Phil and Rudy"  Thanks for your call today. You made my day.

David,  I like the way you think ... an act of kindness may equate into a new client.

Peggy,  I do understand that people are kicked into high gear ... doing more in the same amount of time ... and it can be very stressful if we let it be stressful.  We can choose to enjoy the moments knowing all will be done and everyone gets their turn.

At least I'm not the only one that notices this. Now I don't feel so bad.  I thought it was only me.  I cross the street and drivers, rather then slow down and let me cross, swing into the other lane and go around me, never slowing down.  Sorry that my crossing the street might cost them 10 seconds of their life in an act of being polite.

Carla,  What the heck is happening to the people on this planet?  Is the world going completely mad?  I wonder how those people would feel if they were the one walking and a car swings around them without slowing down.  Truly shameful ... not only are they not being polite they may actually physically harm a pedestrian or worse yet, kill them with their car!

It baffles me how cranky people get during the holidays. When did it become so stressful and less about just enjoying the season? Ridiculous.

Patty, It baffles me too. My sense is that many are shopping and buying when they really don't want to ... but feel an obligation to go into more debt because that is how we are brainwashed.  People are missing the real joy in the holidays.  I enjoy the holidays by staying at home and visiting friends and loved ones.
