$150,000 won't buy a decent box of tissues!
THE SKILL OF MERCHANDISING.
Of course that $150 charge for a box is tissues covers a lot. . . . .
budgeting for the item
issuing and publishing invitations to bid
selecting suppliers
receiving and inventorying product
storage of product
delivery of product to patients
disposal of used supplies or containers
Just think what the cost of an aspirin would be.

Having spent way too much time recently in the hospital, I have decided that hospital tissue is some sort of arcane torture. I know that things are expensive! After all, I just received the bill for my recent stay--approximately $145,000, not counting the doctors' and surgeon's bills which will add another 5k or so, and I'm not even sure all the bills have arrived. Somewhere in the $150,000 it cost to save my life, it seems that a decent box of tissues could have been calculated into the equation.
Don't get me wrong. I know that I received excellent care and I am happy and lucky to be alive. It just seems to me that the little box of tissues got left behind, about 50 years ago, in the modern medical advances. Then again, so did hospital gowns... ;-)
I am still seeing those boxes--in cardiac rehab and even now at my hospital-affiliated health club. It's like a bad dream (cue Psycho music).
I do, however, have an inspiration to share. Whenever you visit anyone in the hospital, take along a box of really good, lotion-infused tissues. Your thoughtfulness will not be forgotten!
