A simple tip for better readability and google placement

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

After reading Brenda Mullen's post on Do I "sound" funny when I write key words in blogging and Lenn Harley's What is SERP? It's the secret to advertising our Real Estate Services on the Net!!  it inspired me to write about one of my pet peeves...and how to turn this aound to your advantage for better placement.

dark hardwood floors westchesterHere's my pet peeve...when people REPEAT the title of the post in the first sentence of their blog post!  It really annoys me because it reads soooooo poorly and it wastes space in their snippet.  (I sometimes use the snippet to determine whether or not I will read on and I bet I'm not alone...both others here do this and customers do too...when they see it in google).

If you were writing for a real person, would you do this?  Would you do this in an email to a customer?  Would you do this in a type written or hand written note?  Would you talk this way?  My guess would be no!

Google tries to optimize what they show to a user based on many factors.  Of course key word stuffing is bad - we all know that.  But, readability is also important, and I would guess will become even more important over time, especially as google continues to improve their algorhythms and as they try to filter out spam and robotic sorts of pages.

In Active Rain University, they seem to be teaching us to repeat the title in first sentence, and that is the reason that most people here are doing this.  And, I know they may disagree with me.  But, I would venture that there is a smarter way to do this....instead, reuse the key words in the first sentence, but mix it up and make it interesting so that is it not repeated word for word.

Dark hardwood floors in Irvington NY 10533

In Irvington NY, dark hardwood floors are very stylish.

Maple flooring in Briarcliff NY 10510

If you're looking for a light colored hardwood floor, consider maple flooring for your home in Briarcliff NY.

I try to mix things up a bit - so that it reads more natural and looks more natural.  Sometimes, I'll use flooring in the title, and floors in the first line or New York vs. NY (or with or without the zip code).  Or for laminate flooring, I might also say floating floor (or even Pergo) since that's what customers sometimes use.  By doing this and incorporating synonyms and/or word variations throughout the post I accomplish a couple of things.  First, I make it more readable and second I bring in more variations for the terms that customers may actually type into google.

I am not perfect, I and definitely get lazy at times, too.  But, take an extra minute or two and look to optimize the combo of your title and first line of you post, and make sure that they work together.  Just my two cents.

Debbie....when I first joined AR and took classes that was one of the first things i learned!  I thought it sounded stupid but heck, what did I know?  So I continue to do it....now I need to re-think it.

Debbie, it is always such a balancing act between making our posts readible and findable---it is nice when there is not much difference.  I agree too that Google will continue to get smarter until it is virtually human :)

Christine - I think the idea is right...I just wouldn't repeat it veribatim.

Charles - Yes, it is a balancing act and google is getting smarter and smarter, and more discriminating.

You raise a good point. I try to mix things up and not use the same words in the post as I do in the title... but as you point out, AR has recommended this so I am sure I have done this from time to time.

Joan - Yes, I think it's so much better to mix it up - even if it's just switching the order of the words.  After all, people type things into google in a different order, too.

Ann - Yes, it is so awkward and it reads terribly.

Christine - I understand.  Other experts would recommend that you mix it up a bit.

Good morning Debbie - I've seen a lot of people doing this, and I wondered the same thing. How is that making the blog better? I like your idea of rewording but using the same key words.

Good advice. I think you can always reword the first couple of sentences so you aren't repeating yourself. I'm just getting started with blogging, so I really enjoy reading all the tips. Thanks.

Debbie, It's nice to hear a voice of reason. Most people just blindly follow directions without thinking.

Wayne & Jean - I know.  I don't think it's making the blog better.  Reinforcing the key words in the first line is very important, but repeating, IMO is not the best way to implement it.

Linda - I so agree.

Jamanda - You are welcome.

Wayne - Thx.  Yes, people need to understand the "why."  Once you do, you can make it work better.

I do this tip and it does make a difference.  Way back when the "repeat the header" advice was popular, I did it for a while.  It actually hurt my readership.  So, I just included the headline keywords in my first sentence - much better reading.

Rich - Thx and you're welcome.  I  have others where the words are closer, but interestingly enough all of these are ranking #1...and I didn't even realize that when I posted this.  I just wrote this quickly and took some recent examples.

Debbie:

I will tell you why I repeat the title.  Steven Graham gave classes on ActiveRain University and that is what he told us to do.  I don't think I am the only person who remembers that.  If it is not what I should do, I will not longer do it.  I hate it too.
