Food trucks - otherwise known as mobile food on wheels - very common here in Arizona and commonly spotted on street corners, in various parking lots near construction sites, at parks on the weekends, etc. It's hit or miss to find them - so if you are driving around, are hungry - and spot one - that's usually how you would end up eating at one.
Recently, these food truck owners have gotten together, created a Facebook Page, and began advertising (and getting sponsored) to host "Food Truck Roundups" in one location. Great idea! They travel all over town a couple days a week and weekends and basically, if you want to try food truck food - this is the best way to do it!
I have never eaten from a food truck - mostly because - I typically eat healthy stuff. But, every once in a while - there is nothing like the taste of a fatty Sonoran dog loaded with grilled onions, peppers, cheese - or a BBQ southern pulled pork sandwich loaded with any type of fixins you can think of!
So - yesterday, there was a food truck roundup just a couple miles from home. I decided to go! Some of the trucks there were:
- The Twisted Tandoor (east Indian cuisine)
- Pin UP Pastries (cupcakes!)
- The Mobile Bistro
- Chef's Kitchen (steamed mussels, shrimp bowl, and more!)
- The Serial Grillers with grilled chicken sandwiches, grilled cheesecakes and chicken cheese-steaks.
- Rolling Chef
My family ended up having a little food from each truck - that included southern pulled pork sandwiches, sweet potato fries, shrimp bowl, chowder soup, all American grilled burger, but the best? Pastries from the Pin Up Pastries truck! All I can say is if oyu have never tried a "not sure if it was a brownie or cookie" topped with a mix of crumbled, toasted pretzels, toffee bits, powered sugar and melted chocolate - it's worth it!
Check out the Tucson Food Truck Roundup Web page - and next time one is your neighborhood make it a night and give it a try!
