Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
Northfield, IL
Now see - you don't have to travel all the way to Durango, Colorado for some really good chocolate! Northfield has its very own store right in town.
Kim Smith, the owner, lives in Libertyville with her husband and two daughters. She was lucky enough to spy a small ad in the local paper that was advertising a business for sale. It was time, she decided, to dip her toe into the chocolate pot and she bought the franchise in 2006.
She went to "Chocolate School" with the parent company in Colorado and learned about their philosophy, how to work with customers, and how to cook. Dipping apples and making fudge were part of the curriculum! Some of the chocolates come directly from the company, but the rest are made in the store.
Their "kitchen" consists of a large granite table, several copper kettles, and chocolate-melting machines for dipping. Caramel for apples is made from scratch and only Granny Smith apples are used - you can choose from 20 different varieties of dipped apples on any given day. There are also five to six different fudge varieties - cooked right there in copper kettles and finished on the granite block. Peanut brittle, chocolate popcorn, and chocolate pizza are also made fresh on-premises.
During the summer months, Rocky Mountain Chocolate serves soft-serve ice cream and shakes.
A customer favorite and the store's most popular item is the caramel pretzel bark - drizzled with chocolate. It's a great hostess or teacher gift, party favor, or birthday present and comes in several sizes.
Speaking of birthdays - she will host your child's birthday party in her store and can personalize items for you. Admittedly, it's a bit crowded and chaotic, but the children love the opportunity to dip and decorate chocolate. Parents and kids alike have fun. She also does fundraisers - call her for more information about your favorite charity.
Kim loves working in her store and loves Northfield as well. She's been a great community promoter and was recently nominated for the "Businessperson of the Year" award. She's been organizing the annual tree lighting and is trying to coordinate a summer outdoor eating area in the courtyard outside her store and draw in some of the local restaurants and stores. Her enthusiasm for Northfield is infectious.
Two of Kim's quotes that summarize her spirit and her store:

"A day in the chocolate business is never a bad day"
