Last year I had Black Phoebe birds hanging around the pool and chasing bugs plus they continually were scooping up the worms in the grass. I love their coloring so it was a treat to see them.

So yesterday I noticed that a family had made a nest in the eaves on the highest point of my two story home. The nest is made of mud, sticks and animal hair.

Kristin, how previous! The birds obviously feel safe at your home making it theirs as well to raise their own little family! How much fun it must be to watch them!

Kristin, isn't it fun to discover that you are a welcome "home" for new families? When I sold my old home here off the lake and moved, I discovered that a new couple had moved in....much like yours, only they were kingfishers.

Hi Silvia,

I guess they feel comfortable here but my husband was not happy at the big muddy nest at the top of the house.I have been trying to figure out how they got the mud up there. I googled it but just talks about the mud and stick nests and no mention how they get it up there. I will be happy to see the babies flying out of the nests and hope to get some pictures.

Hi Gayle,

Yes it is nice that the birds feel safe in our yards and let us share a part of their life. This morning the daddy is fishing in my pool for insects. At first I wondered why they never went to the bird feeder and then read where they eat fish and insects. When I come across little insects, I throw them in the pool and the black phoebes fly in and retrieve them. I am pretty bug free between the birds and the lizards eating the insects but I say "No, leave the worms in the yard".

Hi Kristin - It sounds like they are fun to watch. I had a mallard duck build a nest in my fern a few years ago.

Hi John,

I can imagine how much fun it must have been to watch ducks in a nest with their little ducklings. I cannot wait to see the littlie birdies trying out their wings.

Hi Roy,

I was just on a conference call and had my back doors open and a lot of commotion and shrieking came from the yard. I saw two hawks flying off into the yonder so I think they must have grabbed a bird off the top of my patio cover. I sure hope it was not one of my black phoebe birds as the mama and papa are both so important for survival of the babies. All the birds are squawking and crying right now up in the trees. The chain of nature can be cruel sometimes.

Hi Kristin, On one hand really happy that you have this nest being built under your eaves, but now you have a closer look at the often harshness of nature.  I hate to look out and see feathers on the ground near my feeders.....yes nature is cruel at times.

Take care,

Gloria

Hi Gloria and Doug,

I was out there a few minutes ago as a hawk was flying overhead squawking loudly and all the birds got on alert and ran into the trees. You could see the fear and apprehension of danger nearby. I have sever couples of Mourning Doves and after reading about the hawks, the article says Mourning Doves are one of their favorites. I think now they got one of my doves. I usually see a pair every morning and every night but recently I see only one dove. I am very sad but I know it is nature and they have to feed their chicklets as there are hawk nests all of the area right now.
