Social Media Survival - 3 Reasons not to just accept any connection

Reblogger Mark Brian

Have to admit that I get request from people I do not know on LinkedIn all the time. I wonder what these people are thinking. Wy would I accept their invite? To start getting updates that do not have any value to me?

On the other hand, I follow lots of people on Twitter IF they are in real estate, no matter where they may be located. I do have certain criteria they must meet. Such as if all they do is tweet their listings...

What do you think?

When I first got started on LinkedIn, it was easy to find past colleagues to connect with and I readily accepted everyone invitation I got.  It's like a game, of sorts, to see how many people you can "friend" when you're on a network.  I experienced the same thing on Facebook, Google+, Plaxo, Twitter, and others.  These days, I don't just accept any invitation to connect.  Here are some good reasons why...

Scammers!

I've gotten invitations from people I don't know in places like Greece, Turkey, and numerous other countries.  These people have a few connections to others I know but I've never met them.  Why would someone with a limited profile and suspicious name be trying to connect to me?  My guess:  scams!!

When I get these requests I either ignore them or block them.  There's no business reason to connect and I suspect they'll either try to get my contact information or post random garbage on my feed. In any case, it's not good for my business. My suggestion to you is "Ignore these requests".

Social Butterflies

These are the folks who have nothing going except large social media empires around which they do no business.  They're connected to 2000 people they've never met and they don't sell real estate or sell so little we have nothing in common.  I tend to pass on these folks because they'll never refer any business in either direction and I don't see how they'll help my business.

Irrelevant Business

On one network I got a connection request from an auto repair shop in the midwest.  At first I thought it was a mistake but a few days later I got a connection reminder.  Really?  How does real estate involve auto repair 2000 miles away?  When I get a connection request from someone near or far, it has to be relevant.  It's one thing to connect with a REALTOR in Florida, but why do I need to connect to a title rep there.  Unless they can do business here in California, what's the point?

A big part of surviving in social media is keeping your network relevant.  You've got to do what works for you but keeping a nice, clean, relevant network presents a good image to your readers and makes sure you don't waste time.

Great points; not all connections are of equal value.

Mostly I reject the overseas requests from any of the social media venues. Of course there are exceptions. I do review profiles to see if they are in real estate or a related business. Same review applies to domestic requests.

Gita, I felt this was a great post that others would enjoy so reblogging was my pleasure!

Carol, that is so true!

Jeanne and Ralph, I have no problem with accepting overseas connections if they are legitimate and relevent. I really wish people would take the time to completely fillb out their profiles on social networking sites. If I have to guess at who you are or what you do, then I will not connect.

Bryan, thank you for writing a great article!
