I like to paint walls and have told my friends if I ever quit real estate, I could become their painter. What I didn't know is the different things you can do with paint to add decorating touches to fabrics, flowers, jars, etc.

Read Kim Higgins post and you may also discover some interesting new approaches with paint.

One of the best and easiest ways to freshen up your pad is by adding a fresh coat of paint to your walls!  Painting can dramatically change the look and feel of your home and it can also be a lot of fun!  Lets get started:

What you’ll need

  1. Stepladder
  2. Angled sash brush
  3. Wide paintbrush or paint roller and tray
  4. Extension pole for paint roller
  5. Painter’s masking tape
  6. Cleanup rag

  • Prepare your walls – Scrape away old layers of paint, remove    wallpaper, sand imperfections and apply primer.
  • Protect areas in your home – Cover up the furniture, flooring, and fixtures with drop cloths. Remove hardware and knobs, curtain rods, and cover plates, also cover trim with masking tape.
  • Start with edges – Paint a two- to three-inch strip of paint around the top and bottom trim using an angled brush.
  • Get your roller ready – Use a roller to paint large expanses of wall and the ceiling. Attach an extension pole to reach high areas.
  • Paint! – Of course, fill your paint tray with paint, then, dip the roller in the deep end and roll over the ribbed section of the tray to cover the roller evenly.  Roll up and down on the wall, making thick, vertical stripes, then, roll left and right on the diagonal across the stripes to spread evenly for an even finish.

While you’re touching up the home – why not put a few strokes over these items listed below! Here are five different things you may not have known you can indeed paint!

  • Jars and Canisters – chalkboard paint and an easy-to-apply stencils transform these plain canisters into a unique accessory.
  • Upholstered Chair – used a mixture of water, fabric medium and latex paint to give an old chair a facelift.
  • Curtains – turn plain white curtains into works of art by using four shades of paint, a few rolls of painter's tape and a lot of patience. Try a multi-tone chevron look for a high-end designer window treatment.
  • Dried Flowers – preserve spent hydrangeas by hitting them with a coat of spray paint.
  • Carpeting – yes, you can paint carpet. Cover pesky stains by creating stripes or custom patterns.

I can't wait to get the paintbrush out and start. I saw some venetian plaster paint in a beautiful home and now I am inspired to do my kitchen.

so many good hints Debbie but I cannot do this myself. I am such a slob I would get paint all over. I am better off hiring someone else I would get the person mad at me. Also I am not allowed to clean up after dinner cause I always get water all over the place. I don't know why but GF always complains.

Painting can be very theraputic.  Sounds crazy, but it's like working in the dirt.  You concentrate on this mundane task and your mind can just wander, so you empty your brain of anything and everything.  I remember my house in Alabama, painting everything from the walls to the baseboards.  One bathroom ended up with a design and I used a stippling brush to dot on different colors to create a painted border.  It was fun, but deserved a little more attention.  Thanks for sharing!

Good tips for home owners. Spring is a good time for a fresh coat of paint.

Debbie,

WoW!  An excellent post on using paint in more ways than one.  I've tried a few of these but have never painted an upholstered chair.  I'll have to think about that one.  I can see someone having a lot of fun with these ideas.
