My top 12 real estate pet peeves...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Christiansen Group Realty (260)704-0843

12.  Hidden lock boxes with no warning.  There have been a few times where my clients and I spend more time looking for these suckers than we do looking at the home!

11.  The old "I've been selling real estate for 30 years" card being pulled.

10.  Realtor functions.  Too many big egos in one place, and too many handshakes where the person you are shaking hands with is looking to see who is behind you.

 9.  Speaking of handshakes...  the "double grab and then turn your head and speak very insincerely and over the top" handshake.  I hate that.

 8.  When one of the Realtors at the closing asks the buyer "Is your hand getting tired yet??" that is followed with a hearty laugh.  That joke wasn't funny the first time I heard it, let alone 150 closings later.

 7.  The "reader."  You know, the person that has to read every single line of every single thing they sign at the closing, making the closing take 2.5 hours instead of the 45 minutes it should take.  Hey, if you are that person, I get it.  You want to make sure that you are not signing something you don't understand.  It just annoys me.  The closer explains everything you are signing as we go.

 6.  The "talker" at closing.  It could be the lender, or one of us agents, but that person that is so loud and obnoxious in closings that it over powers the room.  Closings are about our clients, NOT US.

 5.  The cheesy profile pictures.  I could go on, but I'm guilty of this one myself.  I can't STAND the picture that we use, but Amanda really likes it.  I think I look creepy.  Anyway, you know what I'm talking about.  The "Glamour Shots" that some agents use.  They look corny.  Stop it!  Or a cheesy photo like Greg Nino uses here.

 4.  The caravan.  This is the group of people that my unsure client thinks they need to bring to all showings.  It usually consists of parents, siblings and friends, but they bring em all!  Talk about a full house!!

 3.  The kiss ass.  You know...  the one in all the sales meetings that is kissing Mr. Broker's ass.  This person laughs really loud at Mr. Broker's jokes and tells him he is SO FUNNY!  You don't know who I'm talking about?  Ahh...  it's probably you then!!

 2.  The angry agent.  This is the agent that gets all huffy and puffy and treatens to blow your house (or deal) down.  Chill out man.  Your yelling isn't going to change a thing.  It will just cause me to hang up on you until you are calm.

And my #1 real estate pet peeve...

REAL-A-TOR

It's REALTOR.  Real-a-tor sounds like a pre-historic beast or something.

K.  I'm done.  Thanks for reading.

*  This blog was intended to make my peers and friends laugh.  I am not sitting here in an angry state pounding my keyboard and cursing under my breath.  I'm just having a little fun.  Have a good weekend!

Amusing post.  You know what they say...even in your jokes you give away your true feelings.  Anyone who can real should know better that REAL-A-TOR.  REAL-A-TORs especially.  Non-real estate related, out here when I hear the name of the town Tukwila pronounced Tuquila, I immediately know that you are not from this area.

hahaha. You had me saying "yes" as I read each example. I really get embarassed about our industry over many of these points - still blows me away that some of the biggest offenders have a ton of business. How the hell does that happen? :)

I agree with those.  One of my big pet peeves is keys that barely work, or that have a trick to them.  Jiggle the handle, put it in tight, pull the key out slightly.

Great batch of peeves.  I didn't think much of your photo until you mentioned it.  LOL, you do look a little creepy!

They are irritate me, but number 7 you need to be patient with.  There have been lots of times in life I wish I had read more.  They are spending a huge amount of money - they have a right to read what they are signing.  They will be held responsible for it.  Unless you want to be held responsible for it, don't push them, but explain to them what they are signing when they need assistance.

You got some of mine for sure.  "Know-it-alls" are annoying, as are overly opinionated and "my-way-or-the-highway" agents.  Also agents who don't prepare their buyers and sellers for the up's and down's of most transactions, leading to unneeded drama.  Expecting perfection in an imperfect world...

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

At the top of my list is an agent who thinks there way of doing things is the only way and is completely inflexible.  Nice post, er, rant.

For the most part I agree. As for

#7: They have the right to read every word if they chose to do so and I can't fault them for that.

#6: I've written about the talker as well.  It is very distracting.

Not sure it is really funny, more like a reality. And I agree with everything you mention. Glad, so many AR are on the same page with you on 'pet peeves'.

As a loan officer I love going to the closings to support my clients if they have any questions and to thank them personally for thier business.  Now the negative piece of this (stated #6 above), is that sometimes, I feel the conversation from the closing piece is diverted into a talk or catch up session.  It should be about the closing and pretty much that is it.  With some of the agents I work with they make it a chatty event and I personally don't care for this.

I'm with you on 11. I'm right now working with two agents: 1st has 27 years of experience( every signature has this line, but does not mention anywhere how many sales are done, and the number is very low), another one is #1 in customer satisfaction( self proclaimed, #1 since it is only him in his brokerage ). Both are very difficult to work with.
