Social media neglect - worse than never having been online

I thought this was such a good eye opening article for all us using social media, and if your on here reading, that's you too.  We should all plan our time wisely and allow time to show our social media sites the attention the need to work for us.  Good article Bryan!

The abandoned wrecks of neglected Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, and Google+ pages are everywhere.

They're left by agents who, under the suggestion of smart social media experts, start the pages and let them slowly dwindle into nothingness.  It's like inviting everyone to a party, having a bunch of people showing up, and then walking out the door.  Guess what?  I've done that.

My Facebook relic

A long time ago I read an article about setting up Facebook profiles. The idea was simple: set up a page, post interesting content, and the masses will flock to you.  I was also told that you could use a Facebook business page much like a personal website.  Just share it in various places and you'd get consumer traffic.  Now, even 2 years ago I wrote decent blogs so I thought it would be no problem to just feed my posts to the Facebook page and I'd magically get leads.

Not even close.

The number of people following the site slowed down.  I got likes from agents in other markets but no consumers.  I got comments from other agents but not consumers.  The purpose was to appeal to consumers so...I abandoned it.

The Slow Decline To No Content

I went from posting every couple of days to posting one or twice a month.  It took a little while but the quality and quantity of posts dropped significantly.  My page got a few more likes but the lack of content meant nothing mattered.  Once I got to posting nothing for weeks at a time, I got no new hits, no interest.

What's The Lesson?

Either stay with it or don't start in the first place. I know that's harsh but the reality is leaving a mark online makes people wonder how serious you are.  My page is "Unpublished", which means I could go back and resurrect it. However, that's never going to happen.  I'm much happier with Twitter and I tend to stay on top of that more often.  Facebook is history...for business.

Jennifer, that makes perfect sense to me, however, finding time to post to sites that don't bring you business is kind of like buying an ice cream cone and let it melt...

@Evelyn - I understand what you are saying however, sometimes a blog, it just to inform, educate or make someone think. If I only blogged where I got business, I may never blog. Keep blogging its good for the soul!

@Bryan - my pleasure!!
