Even Concrete Walls Can Crumble Over Time

 Precast concrete wall in Sacramento

I was called out to look at a precast concrete wall that was failing in Sacramento, CA. The crumbling concrete pieces were called out during an inspection by the County of Sacramento.

The precast concrete wall pieces seem to be failing horizontally at the point where the rebar was imbedded in each piece. My guess is that a combination of movement in the wall and flaw in the manufacture of the pieces.

While the County noted that the bottom course had to be corrected, I think that the owners need to consider replacing all of the wall pieces. It is just a matter of time before each of the other pieces fail.

Even with rebar, that's too long a span.  There is a lot of weight in that wall!  It has to be supported.

Good morning Tom. Funny, in the major cities of the world 500 year old buildings still stand. Perhaps theywere onto something.

It sure seems to be the case from this photo Jay. Many of the other sections are experiencing the same cracking.

That is true Sheila! History has shown us that it is possible to construct buildings that last.

Roger - Couldn't we manufacture things that could at least last a bit longer? Especially if it is built from concrete.  :)

Lenn - This is not a retaining wall. The wall is about 6' high and divides the apartment community from the neighboring school. Similar, taller and thinker walls are used along the freeway as a sound deadening barrier between homes and traffic. The bigger ones seem to hold up for a much longer time.

I don't know how they would get rebar into that hollow block anyway Tom.  It could not be very strong if they did.

there isn't much concrete between the rebar and the outside surface Jay. The rebar is probably 3/8" and the width of the precast concrete is about 1-1/2"; I would think that a wire mesh would be better.
