What's Your Serial Number and Model Number???

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

The excitement of buying new appliances can soon fizzle when something goes wrong. Most appliances offer at least a one year warranty; however, if you don't know where to look for the Serial Number and Model Number, you will more than likely not get a service person at your house to fix the problem until you provide both Serial Number and Model Number. The person who works for the Manufacturing Company does not care where you live or what your name is - they want your Serial Number and Model Number.

The problem with newer appliances is that they put the Model Number and Serial number in those hard to find places where you would never expect to look and the numbers and letters are long and very, very, very tiny. For example, my washing machine Serial Number and Model Number is on the back of my machine. Not only do I have to pull the washing machine out to get to the sticker, I practically have to stand on my head with a magnifying glass to read the combination of numbers and letters.

On my kitchen stove, I have get down on the floor and locate the smallest sticker known to man in the bottom left corner that butts up to the corner of my kitchen sink.

For all my appliances, I have had to play hide and seek to locate the Model Number and Serial Number. Eventually, I found them all printed on itsy, bitsy, teeny weenie letter and number combinations that are impossible to read without a magnifying glass or being a contortionist.

When purchasing new appliances, I recommend recording the Serial Numbers and Model Numbers when the delivery man delivers the appliances. If your property is sold, be sure to pass that information on to a Buyer when they buy your home and the appliances stay. Two years ago I purchased a washing machine and I justed received notification that there has been a recall on my washer. However, before they would come out to upgrade the appliance, they needed the Serial Number and Model Number - they didn't care about my name or address until I relayed that information. Only then, after providing them with both, did they ask for my email address, telephone number, home address, and name - in that order.

Patricia, OK now I need to see pictures of you trying to get that serial number for the washing machine.  I am sure you would get a featured blog for that one ...... LOL

Patricia, sometimes the cynic in me wonders if they put them in the hardest places to discourage people from persevering and getting the info to call in with. Definitely a great idea to record them when they are installed and keep a file on hand.

Kathy - Thanks for your support! Assuming that you don't have to access the Serial # or Model # for newer appliances is a mistake. I found that out the hard way! Keep a record is a necessity today.

Joe - I don't think it is crazy at all! When I had a house fire, I had to prove everything I owned. Basically, without a receipt or any proof ownership, you're out of luck. You're a smart man!

Now this is some great advice Patricia, I can't remember how many times I have needed a serial number only to realize it is nowhere in sight and some major excavation is in order.

Scott - I know exactly what you mean! I have a magnet on my kitchen stove with the manufacturer's 1-800 number just in case I need to reach them. Nowhere on that magnet does it tell me I need the Model # and Serial #.  When I needed to call them, it took a great deal of patience to get through to anyone and then when I did, the person wouldn't speak to me unless I provided her with my Serial # and Model #. She would give me any information about where to look for it and all. She said, "When you find the numbers, call me back."

Patricia, I think we can all relate to this.  I do the same with all of my computer equipment as well. This includes my new flat screen TV and sound bar. Anything that has a serial number and model number is well documented. I've stood on my head for this kind of information for the last time.

Patricia, I love your thinking on this one. It should have been suggested! It's one of those annoying things that we ought to tell our clients about OFTEN (and ourselves) that can be really important should something break.

The former owners of our beautiful home had an entire notebook that they handed over with tabbed areas, they were truly remarkable and obviously have done this before. Warranties and everything. It sure has made our lives easier!

Pat, In my quest to become organized, I will do this. The serial numbers are always hard to read and in strange places. I am starting to use Evernote, perhaps I will utilize that for the serial numbers.

Patricia, I've been pretty lucky with appliances.  But even with computers, you need a magifying glass to read the serial number and model number.  Yikes!

Patricia I can so relate to this it can be such a pain.  Good idea for a seller to have this information for a buyer.

Hi Patricia, when we moved into our new home...I wrote all the serial numbers for the appliances in a book. It is good to have handy just in case!
