300 Word Posts are blah blah blah??? Says Who??? Why Do They Care??

100 words is mere blah, blah, blah???

While I have a healty respect for pithy, it's rare that 100 words is sufficient to adequately describe a process or worthwhile opinion.  I surely don't want to post about complicated matters that leave more questions than answers.

I'm fine with 300 words for contests.  It discourages the "drive-by" posters who post for points.

Encouraging members to post isn't helped by members' focusing on other than the content and message.

If one wishes to limit themselves to 100 words, go for it.

Blah! Blah! Blah!300 Word Posts are blah blah blah!

We don't understand why some Active Rain Contests require a minimum of 300 words.  We are of the belief that if you can't make your point in 50-100 words, you probably don't have a point!

We understand that some posts are educational or "how tos" and may need to be lengthy.

However, we usually don't have the time or the patience to read some posts.  We literally have to search through some post's text to try to find out what the writer is trying so say.

Blah! Blah! Blah!Since we are reaching our 100 recommended limit, we will conclude with:

300 Word Posts are blah blah blah!

Hi Lenn - Yeah, if I read anything longer than 50 words or so, my lips get really tired.

I would be one of those posters that would just say "great post", "great information" or something else short but it is not considered polite or correct! If the post was written well then what more should I really say? The 300 word minimum is indeed for the search engines to make sure they are "real" articles. Great post. :)

Thanks Bob.  The verbose among us love to droll on.

Gerard.  Agreed.  I simply can't express a thought or write about a community in 100 words.

Dick.  Thanks for the chuckle (out loud).

Jeff.  Agreed.  I read a lot of posts and, while some are long, if the thought is important, fine with me.

Jane.  You are so right.  Conformation is especially important with long posts.

Jan.  AGreed.  300 words just isn't long.

Bruce.  Goo Goo is my inspiration.

Bill.  "So be it" is a fact.

Lenn: There's always TWITTER for those who can be really brief. I like the AR system in that I really try to think about what I'm writing, not just dashing off some words for the points. And GOOGLE seems to be paying attention.

Lenn, I can rarely communicate a cohesive thought in 100 words. I probably write between 300 - 400 words. Unfortunately, there have been times when I needed to use more.

That's just where "staging" the post and keeping the words flowing with good content matter.  Frankly my target audience probably isn't those suffering from ADHD, but those that want to walk away from a topic with as close to zero questions as possible....other than, hopefully, Can you help me buy/sell a home?.

Most people drive by looking for points!  Well, I don't.  Contests I can do in one post I participate in - these whole month, 35 posts with a certain this or that I never do.

If some one wants to particpate in the contest . . . . 300 words is th number.

Good luck and success.

Lenn, I feel some post need at least 300 words to get the point across.  I admire the ones who say what they have to say short and to the point.  I definitely do not like reading posts that look like a book.  I just do not have time for that and will skip right over it.

Hi Lenn. I like short posts and can understand for contests they set a minimum number of words.

Hi Lenn.  Localism posts need to be longer but I am a fan of brevity.  It must be my ADHD.

Jay.  I agree that some are far too complicated.  But, I don't design them.  I either participate or pass.

Lou.  If that's the criteria, indeed.

Merlene.  Most overlong posts could easily be 2-3 posts.  Easier to read and hold interest.

Lana.  I like short posts that make a point, but just words is just for points.

Conrad.  It doesn't take ADHD to know when a post leaves us with more questions than information.

I prefer pithy in most posts but I do understand the minimum in contests too, Lenn. I also know that some subjects need more than 100 words to get the point across.   There is only so much time in the day!

Toni.  I actually have a lot of time to devote to posts.  I don't really care if they're short or long as long as they say something worthwell.

Oh my! It is not always possible to get a point across with 100 words, or a subject might need deeper explaination than that.  You can't use word count as a basis for a post...

Aloha Lenn,

I have a 300 to 500 word preference for posts otherwise I go cross eyed. Too much info out there to bother with the longer posts. I go to an e-zine or pull out a magazine or book if I need something more substantial. I hate seeing mammoth posts especially if it's it a topic I enjoy. I usually break up the post into sections and email to myself if it seems worth the read. I also can't stand informational CD's where the speaker fills 45mins with yada, yada, yada that can be essentially reduced to a 15 nugget.

Peace,
