There is an interesting article in the WSJ about how to choose your retirement destination with the explanation "The Experts weigh in.". They had my interests until I saw some of the experts included Suzanne Somers and Morgan Fairchild. Wow, just wow.
However the expert list did include creditable people like Joseph Coughlin of the MIT Age Lab also and reading through the article there are some really good points.
Suzanne Somers says you should pick out a community not based on age because all 65 year olds are equal, many are on oxygen, some in wheelchairs, and have medical problems. She lives in Palm Springs where the 65 year olds are active and healthy. Thank you Suzanne. Maybe Active Adult Communities would be more likely to have active people rather than the generic 55 Plus Communities.
Molly Mettler says rather than using those "Best Places to Retire" list you should ask yourself Will I feel like I belong in this community? and can I keep on learning and contribute.
Marc Agronnin says don't forget medical care in choosing a retirement destination. You may end up move away from your retirement paradise because medical issues that require medical attention and experts that are not available.
Morgan Fairchild says don't pick a retirement community just because you liked your visit there, pick one how you will fit in with the neighbors and things like political affiliations. Don't pick a gold community if you are not a golfer.
Bud Hebeler is another that says health care is important factor in deciding where to retire.
Joseph Coughlin cites transportation as a very important factor. He warns those active adult communities on the outskirts may not be easy to get where you want to go when you cannot drive anymore. He also lists the availability of health care services and can you remain socially connected?
Marc Freedman says work opportunities are important. This article in the WSJ.
So those comments were helpful but at the end of the day only you care decide your retirement destination. Nobody can do it for you and even the "experts" don't agree. I say get out and explore for your own.
