The Port St Lucie City Council voted against allowing the Torino Treatments Campus last night.  The campus would have two buildings, a detox center for patients staying for 5 to 7 days and a 30 day rehab facility.
Dozens of people who live in the Torino Drive area spoke out against it, saying that stigma of detox centers have will wreck their neighborhood, Port St Lucie risks becoming a dumping ground for other city and states and that it was all about the money.
James Green, the lawyer for the project read what he said were discriminatory city council statements made against other group homes the past year, telling the council they had met all the legal requirements and should be approved
The city’s own attorney warned Port St Lucie would be sued under the federal Fair Housing law if they rejected the Torino detox center.  City Councilmember Shannon Martin worried about that too and voted against the rezoning, but left the meeting before the council rejected the site plan.
Port St Lucie has been sued twice before by other sober group homes that where rejected.  One has been dropped, the other is still pending in the courts.

This is such a controversial topic.  What do you think?
