Australian-pine – Invasive Species

Australian pine is native to Australia and Southeast Asia.  It is an evergreen tree which may grow up to 150 feet in height and strangle the surrounding plants, covering them with pine needles. It grows in poor soil and young shoots grow from the aggressive roots, spreading out easily and uncontrollably.

Enjoy the video!

This tree reproduces by suckering. You may see many small trees growing from around the base of the big tree.

Some people using this pine tree as a windbreak or along the property lines. It has no leaves, however it has plenty of needles with many joints; each joint is about one inch in length. It takes a lot of time to rake the needles, if left alone; no other plant can grow under the thick layers of pine needles.

To avoid an Invasive species - learn more about the name of a plant you like before you plant it in your garden.

Kwee, I must admit, I don't know much about trees or beautiful, colorful plants. It's always a good idea to research the tree and the plant prior to planting it as some may not be ideal for our yards. Australian Pine is one tree I would not want to have.

Pretty but deadly, thanks for the video about the characteristic of the Australian Pine and the harm that it causes when planted in the wrong areas.

It is common to see Australian Pines in Venice FL, especially along the  main road infront of a house. Homeowners used it as a fenced for privacy.

Hi Alexandra, I appreciate you stopping by. I am so honored you read this blog.

Like most invasive species, these trees were intentionally planted, because it seemed like a good idea at the time.  They are one of the worst nuisance trees in Florida.  Today, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection forbids the planting or cultivation of Australian Pines.

Kwee, I would not have thought this tree could grow in Florida!    I have a few pine trees, and the needles make such a mess when they fall!

Kwee - Bamboo is often used in my area as a privacy screen and it can be very invasive too.  A consultation with a professional landscaping service can be worthwhile as planting the wrong specimens is often a costly mistake.

Kwee: We plant these crazy trees and feel nothing will go wrong. We feel we can grow anything because we are not trained as we were years ago about nature. This Austrailian Pine is certainly a pain in the  neck.

Hi Kwee,

I do not like invasive plants and they seem to kill off the good trees too. I have had 5 of my  palm trees removed as they grow to big and get too close to patios and pools. Sometimes we do not realize this when purchasing the cute little tree or shrub at the nursery. Great post!

I will be the one contrarian and say that I think they look nice :)  However, invasive species that overtake everything else are not good!
