4 Quick Tips To Closet Cleanout - Charlotte Home Seller Tips

Declutter Your Charlotte Home for SaleHaving met with a moving company this week to obtain an estimate on our local move early next year, reminded me that the more ‘clutter’ we have, the more costly our move will be!  Not only will Charlotte home buyers judge our home as being too cluttered but, the increased moving expense is simply not worth it to me to move belongings that have been stored in the backs of closets, accumulating over the years!

Your living spaces are the most important rooms in your home. They’re where you read bedtime stories, have family dinners and make many memories.  However, most of these rooms wouldn’t be as inviting or function well without their valuable out-of-sight storage spaces — their closets.

Closets are essential to keeping your home organized, clean and livable.  So, the plan is to set aside two days this month to tackle my “mini storerooms” and turn them into orderly spaces with the tips below.

Designate A Theme For Each Closet

Every closet in your Charlotte home should have a specific purpose, such as a space for only linens, cleaning supplies or coats.  Don’t cheat and put the vacuum in the hall closet just because it’s the nearest.  Make sure you return items to their proper closet, so you always know exactly where tools or shoes can be found.

Create Specific Spaces

Whether this means adding shelving or dividers, you’ll want to designate a space for each item.  To do this, remove everything from the closet and prioritize it by importance.  Then place the most important things within easy reach.  This might require a trip to purchase a closet storage system or bins. I f there’s anything at the bottom of your priority list left over, get rid of it.

Make It Look Good

If it’s a space you utilize daily, such as a walk-in closet, then make it a pleasure to be in it.  Every closet should have good lighting; so install bright bulbs that allow you to see what you’re selecting.  If you have a large walk-in closet, you could glam it up and add functionality with funky chandeliers, a built-in ironing board and a specified shoe cabinet.

Divide And Conquer

If you have children who need to share a closet, then get creative.  Assign them different colored hangers and bins with labels.  From bedroom and toy closets to craft and coat closets, you’ll reduce confusion and frustration when everyone has their own space. Reduce your clutter confusion by giving everything in your house its own home.

By following these tips you’ll soon have well-organized closets that serve specific purposes and make it easy for anyone in your family to find what they need.

Debe, great tips here. In our area where basements aren't common, people are always concerned about enough storage space. Tips like these are especially important to follow given space constrainments. Now, if I could only get my own closets organized in this way.

Tammie,  We don't have a lot of basement homes either - now that would be a great place to 'move' all of this STUFF that has taken over my own house!

Michelle, Oh, how I wish I had been doing that all along too!  I get in moods and then get busy and think, "I'm not moving any time soon...I'll be okay!"  Now, I'm on a rush to save significant moving costs because my closets are way too full!!

Nancy, Thanks!  Wish I'd taken my own advice years ago!!  ;-)

I'm gonna need more closets if I can't mix my coats and vacuum cleaner Debe.   But you're right, I do need to organize them and love your tips.

Debe- great tips!  I spend yesterday organizing my pantry, culling food items that were beyond the expiration date or placing some still fresh items in a donation bag for the local food pantry.

Debe, I like the tip about children sharing the closet with different color themes. This is what my daughter does for her two boys and she has toy and shoe bins with the kids' favorite color so each child can find his stuff and clean up his stuff.
