How to Plan a Traditional Thanksgiving MealWith Thanksgiving just a few days away, some people start feeling stressed about what their holiday menu will look like.  After all, your dinner guests will have a variety of tastes and favorites.  Your guest list could include a vegetarian, a diabetic or a plain old picky eater.

Here's a little help, though, for anyone who's wanting their guests to feast on the traditional Thanksgiving fare.

  • The Bird - No Thanksgiving meal is complete without the star of the holiday table - Mr. Tom himself.  Turkeys come fresh, frozen and thawed.  Whichever one you choose will work out fine in the end.  If you're fixing a table for two, consider purchasing Cornish Game Hens instead of the big bird.
  • Eat Your Veggies - Fresh, baked, mashed or steamed, well seasoned and thoughtfully prepared veggies are always a hit.  You can always go with the classic Green Bean Casserole, prepare an eye-popping fresh veggie platter or go with the lighter steamed fresh carrots, broccoli or other favorites.  There are also tons of salad favorites.
  • Stuffing or Dressing - Ever wonder what the difference is between stuffing and dressing?  Stuffing is what's placed inside the turkey cavity and dressing is simply baked in a casserole dish.  Stuffing and dressing can be made with breads or cornbread.  Using a vegetable, chicken or turkey broth instead of water will add a richer flavor to your dressing.
  •  Cranberry Sauce - Omitting cranberry sauce from your menu is like forgetting to bake a pumpkin pie!  You can, of course, purchase a can of the burgundy stuff or you purchase fresh cranberries and flavor it with orange peel or other flavors.  Cranberry sauce and turkey - what a great combination!
  • Let the Eat Pie! - Traditionally pumpkin pie is the star dessert.  In place of pumpkin, many bakers choose to make sweet potato pie instead.  Add a little fresh whipped cream and it will definitely make the last bite one of the best bites.

Whether you choose to make the traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings or  an intimate setting for two, the most important part of any Thanksgiving meal is the company.

Enjoy every minute of your Thanksgiving day with the people you love and you'll always have an abundance of things to be grateful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Pamela,

You are so right, the company is the most important part of dinner. Preparing dinner for our family is a fun challenge, we have meat eaters, vegans, and gluten intolerants. We have a wide variety of dishes to meet the likes and needs of everyone, makes things interesting and fun.

Pamela,

I am thankful that I stopped by your blog. Thanksgiving has always been a huge feast and gathering at my house. This year I am determined to spend more time with the family instead of in the kitchen...wish me luck!

Pamela- in my family it has always been the more the merrier, and that applies to the food and people.  Me?  I head for the mashed potatoes and dressing!

Pamela, thanks for your tips, they are always great, especially about food, but mostly about marketing. Thank you for all you do. I love pumpkin pie more than sweet potato although both do taste excellent with whip cream.

Good luck, Sarah and Lester.  Think of foods that can be prepared ahead of time and then sit back and relax on Thanksgiving Day.

My kind of gal, Kathy.  Mashed potatoes are my all-time favorite food.  We're trying twice baked sweet potatoes this year.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I've was never a sweet potato fan, Phil, until I tried sweet potato fries.  After that, I tried a few recipes here and there.  Still not in love with them but they do make a great pie; more flavorful than pumpkin.  Thanks for your comments, as always.

Pamela, don't tell anyone, but, I'm taking a shortcut this year. I've put a call into Cracker Barrel for the six serving take out turkey dinner, it'll have all the fixings with none of the cooking!!! I'll report back later on how it went over. Home cooked, take out, or sit down at a local restaurant, this is the time of year when family and friends should come together, where there is never a dull moment, and we'll all be ready for a post dinner nap!!!

Love your perspective, Stephen.  One year I tried a supermarket version of the complete Thanksgiving meal and was asked to never do that again.  I'm curious to know how Cracker Barrel's dinner goes.  I'll look forward to your report back.

Pamela, this year we will be having Thanksgiving dinner at my sister's house.  But, since my Diverticulitis is acting up...I will not be stuffing myself this year.  My favorite pie is Sweet Potato Pie, never liked pumpkin pie. But, I like pumpkin roll and pumpkin cake.  Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Rebecca - Sometimes things taste better when someone else does the cooking.  :)  Thanks for your comments!
