Out with the Old...Reward Yourself and Others ...

closet crammed full   This is the time of year when we make resolutions..and for us, our tradition is to clear/clean out closets and storage areas...get rid of the old...make way for the new..or less cluttered. It is amazing the clothes and other things that hide in corners, shelves and drawers.

If this is also your tradition...or one you would like to start..or save for a snow day...begin in the spring...here are a couple helpful hints.  We are not going to give you the famous... if you have not worn/used in a year ....throw away advice. I am all too guilty of not following that one myself.

Decide where you are going to give various Goodwill truckitems...clothing may be one place and household items another.  Call your intended charity first...there are times when not all non profit organizations may have the room to store every kind of item...or they may have changed what kinds of things that they are able to accept...or pick up based upon their facilities and volunteer staff.

clothes pile Be sure the clothes are clean and we sort them by type...pants, shirts, dresses etc. and before each gets put in large trash bags for easy hauling....we also get out pen and paper.....and use this guide for recording our donations for tax deductions.book

You will feel better starting the new year with cleaner, less cluttered spaces...AND while gaining the tax deduction...you have helped someone by donating items that they will welcome to start their new year.

If starting the new year means a new home in southeastern Wisconsin....call the Hansons...we will give you moving tips and the very best in prompt professional real estate services and proven results !

Great advice Sally.  It is amazing how we accumulate so much "stuff".

Great time f the year to be sharing about what can be donated to charities and assist others. So much stuff we just don't need that can make all the difference in the world to someone in need.

Make it a great weekend!

I have been on a cleaning kick for a while now but I am nowhere near done. I think we as Realtors are more tuned into doing this because we have seen so many homes that have not been decluttered prior to selling. Good luck with your goals!

This is a timely post and many of us need to clean out our closets, basement and garage. It may be best to eat this elephant one bite at a time.

Hi Sally and David,

We do this just about every spring. We donate to the Woman's family shelter for abused women. Very good cause and all the donations stay here in town too.

Have a wonderful 2014 year of sales in Wisconsin.

Best, Clint McKie

And a reminder to never toss anything "textile" in the trash!  Believe it, or not, things that "no one would ever wear" might be true, but that doesn't mean it should end up in a land fill.  Still donate it to charity, they will sort through it and send it to the recycling of the textile world.  Here's a link.

Sally & David- you know you're right, there's something very freeing and cleansing about getting rid of all of the "stuff" we keep around us.  Contacting an organization before you start to sort is a great idea, so that you won't waste your time with certain items that they may not accept.
