A few days ago one of my e-mail addresses stopped working. There was suddenly a pop-up window, and I was requested to put my password, It was all automatic, but anyway, I typed in my password once, and then another time, and then again…
I know my password. Something was wrong.
I went to AT&T site and initiated a chat. The person on the other end suggested that I try access my email from the website. Nope, didn’t work.
Themi then walked me through changing the password. Soon it was done. Below is an interesting part of this chat (I copied and saved it)
jon zolsky: I was able to get there and see emails. Thank you. I will make changes to Outlook. Why did it happen? Has someone hacked it?
Themi: That's great! AT&T may prompt you once in every 30 days to change your password in order to enhance your email account security and if there is no password change for a long time, AT&T may reject the existing password just to insure to change it to enhance the security of our customer's account.
Oops... So, there may be nothing wrong with your account, but AT&T would block it, sending you into a panic mode.
I truly do not want to change passwords every month and every year. It is a problem for me remembering all of my IDs and passwords.
I told this to a friend, who works for an international corporation. He laughed at me. He said they have to change passwords every 2 weeks, and that the system remembers past 8, so the trick of using only two and alternating does not work…
Talking about relativity :)
