What If Your Email Address Suddenly Stops Working?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Daytona Condo Realty, 386-405-4408

A few days ago one of my e-mail addresses stopped working. There was suddenly a pop-up window, and I was requested to put my password, It was all automatic, but anyway, I typed in my password once, and then another time, and then again…

EmailI know my password. Something was wrong.

I went to AT&T site and initiated a chat. The person on the other end suggested that I try access my email from the website. Nope, didn’t work.

Themi then walked me through changing the password. Soon it was done. Below is an interesting part of this chat (I copied and saved it)

jon zolsky: I was able to get there and see emails. Thank you. I will make changes to Outlook. Why did it happen? Has someone hacked it?

Themi: That's great! AT&T may prompt you once in every 30 days to change your password in order to enhance your email account security and if there is no password change for a long time, AT&T may reject the existing password just to insure to change it to enhance the security of our customer's account.

Oops... So, there may be nothing wrong with your account, but AT&T would block it, sending you into a panic mode.

I truly do not want to change passwords every month and every year. It is a problem for me remembering all of my IDs and passwords.

I told this to a friend, who works for an international corporation. He laughed at me. He said they have to change passwords every 2 weeks, and that the system remembers past 8, so the trick of using only two and alternating does not work…

Talking about relativity :)

Oh, Jon!  I use the mac thing, iCloud, for my email.  It is quite wonderful and doesn't lose anything.  At least not yet.

Jon, last year (or so) our MLS required us to change our password every 3 months. I guess they got too many users protesting it and have now changed it to every 6 months. I have trouble coming up with new passwords all the time.. it takes me a month (or so) to get used to the new one.

It would not be a good thing if any of my email addresses suddenly stopped working. I would be in panic mode immediately.

I don't know if there's anyone that likes changing passwords. It's all too much too remember. I always get the message, "you changed your password 25 days ago, 35 days, 50 ...   My memory is long gone.

Our MLS makes us change every 90 days -- ugh. Remembering passwords is becoming a major hassle for sure!

I want to comment on this, but I changed my password and can no longer remember it, so I can't!

If my email host made me change my password every 30 days, I'd shoot myself in the head and send everything by clay pigeon.

I also hate changing my password but I think this is the best way to secure our account online. Just my opinion :))

Eric - it is difficult to say. Let me just say that my 13 year old grandson can hack a much better secured system, than anything I have with no matter what the password.

So, if someone wants access to my email, they can get it easily

I am deep into password overload.  I have paper files of passwords, online folders (in code of course!), etc.  And of course I had to get my AR password reset today since I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. Ugh!  A monthly reset would push me over the edge.
