Yes, it does snow in Hawaii and it's snowing RIGHT NOW~
Although the forecast, below, says RAIN, that is at the 6903 ft. level:

But way up at the 13,797 foot level, it's another story: SNOW THROUGH WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1.

Did you read correctly? Yes, Mauna Kea is 13,797 feet high and that is quite a trek up the mountain. Especially when word gets out that it is snowing. Big Islanders pack up their kids and anything that can SLIDE and head up there.
No, there are no ski lifts or anything else that makes it easy, but that's ok. This is just a fun time. Traffic gets all jammed up, but no one cares, you just park at the side of the road and start trekking UP. Or you drive to the top, drop off the kids, and pick them up below somewhere.
For best results, WAIT UNTIL IT STOPS SNOWING, that means about Thursday. But with the kids out of school for the Christmas Holidays, you know that's not going to happen. Be warned though, you don't want to get stuck in the snow BEFORE the snow plow has opened up the road. I don't think AAA responds to calls from there.
We all turn into kids when it snows on the Big Island; that really is me hamming it up in the warmest clothes I could find, a jogging outfit.
And the VIEWS from up there? Absolutely spectacular.
The photo, below, was taken a little ways back during one of those days when it had just STOPPED snowing. You can see Haleakala on Maui to the right way over the channel.
The photo, top, yes that's me, just not THIS year.
