Fishhawk Lake--Keep Your Camera in Hand!

Yesterday while driving in Astoria, Oregon, I had just gone over a bridge when out of the corner of my eye, I saw something large swooping down towards an old pier sitting in the bay. I raced through the roundabout and pulled over, grabbing my camera.

A solitary bald eagle was quite a ways away and the sun was fading, so the light was poor, but I didn't have anything to lose so I just kept shooting into the sun. He landed.

As I tried different angles, suddenly, I saw another bird fly by towards the eagle.

Oh my gosh, it was a SECOND eagle! They were too far for clarity, but then the other one headed across the street, and I just followed with my lens. I got a few more shots even though it was moving really fast. Moving with it in sports mode, I did the best I could.

It was still exciting to simply SEE two bald eagles together and I had my camera in hand!

And be sure and check out Astoria, Oregon--I always get photo ops when I drive there from Fishhawk Lake.

Isn't it great to have a camera handy when those once-in-a-lifetime moments occur.  Wonderful!

Wow Gayle,

We had a golden eagle that frequented our property in Napa.  Everytime we would notice him, he would do a flying swoop on our field and then head back to a really big oak tree where he liked overseeing all the vineyards.  A

John, bless you for being kind in your assessment of my not-so-perfect photos....

Carol, I have to say that I was SO excited just to exhibit this wonder of nature, regardless of how clearly the photos came out!

Geri~wonderful is right! It thrills me as I am completely drawn to bald eagles.

Alexandra, in these winter months, I have the chance to enjoy a bald eagle perched high up in the trees across from my lakefront, but I still need to get a bigger lens and a tripod to capture the kinds of photos that I REALLY want. The never-ending quest for perfection! (i'll have to check out what a Golden Eagle looks like vs a Bald Eagle).

Hi Gayle, When I first started taking photos as a hobby, I bought my first DSLR camera which is a Pentax and six months later I purchased the more advanced Nikon which I still use. I was going to sell the Pentax but because it is like new, I have decided to purchase an air tight case to keep the Pentax in my trunk so I will always have a camera with a couple lenes even when not carrying the Nikon equipment.

Been caught too many times not having my camera with me and then trying to rely on the iPhone.

Thanks for sharing a few more great shots, that last one was very nice, its good that you had your camera handy.

I see a lot of eagles fairly up close, but almost never have time to grab a camera, I glad that you are much more prepared than I am.

William, honestly, I think of you EVERY TIME I go through this process, because your photos ARE so clear and I hold you in high esteem. I figure that I will get there in my nature photography, and sometimes it takes HOURS to get just the right photo. I don't have that luxury, so I shoot, and hope for perfection (ha!) in an editing process. Bottomline, it's incredibly wonderful just to see these majestic creatures in abundance!

Bob, I was moving, shifting, shooting through wires, trees, power poles! Couldn't believe that with me moving from across the street as well as him moving so far away that I got anything worth salvaging!

Kerry,God love ya, thank you for being kind!

THAT is very cool Gayle. I am not sure I have ever encountered two bald eagles with the camera. Your nature sure flourishes there.

What a great opportunity you got to capture on film (pixels.) Very jealous of you getting to see these majestic birds in the wild where you work and live. Then to have the camera ready, what a great day!

Joe, I decided that it was appropriate (and so true) to use Roy Kelley's famous tagline, "Always have your camera in hand"...very smart advice. The times that I haven't I pretty much always kick myself because there is something special that I can't photograph.

James, a very funny bit of trivia! So glad that these birds are no longer endangered...partly thanks to Nixon, I believe, in '72, was it??

Sharon, I was BEYOND with excitement--you nailed it! The thing is I just shoot and shoot and hope that when I get home, there's something that's salvagable. What I didn't realize is that I had a picture of both of them together as it happened so fast.

Gary, last week I saw two fighting (or mating) in the air while I was at our clubhouse early one morning and I had talked myself out of bringing my camera--so THIS time I got a 2nd chance!

Jeff, I count my lucky stars EVERY DAY!

I never tire or get over the thrill of seeing these big birds in action. As you might guess, growing up in Alaska, they were everywhere. The biggest thrill was when we'd be out fishing and dad would throw a bait fish up in the air - the eagles would swoop down and get it - talk about thrilling.

I hate missing great shots because I didn't have camera in hand.   That would have been thrilling to see the two eagles.  The bottom picture turned out great.

Take care,
