We hear so much bad news on the TV, radio, and in the newspapers. But the good news is that there is PLENTY of GOOD news out there in our communities. Here are some examples from my neck of the Pierce County Washington woods this month.
Grand news for Tacoma! The Tacoma Fire Department has just announced that they were awarded a grant from the SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Program. While this grant won't pay to re-open a recently closed fire station in Tacoma, it will provide $3.4 million to fund as many as "20 existing front-line firefighter positions for two years."
The City of Lakewood shared a variety of ways that collaboration between city and a wide variety of groups is helping to make Lakewood an even better place to live. For example, Young Life and JBLM got together with the Woodbrook Middle School and painted, spread new bark on the school's playground area, and cleaned up the school grounds. And many of their elementary students are smiling BIG smiles thanks to the screenings from Linquist Children's Dental.
Of course one good news item that many are cheering for mightily is that the Seattle Seahawks are in the Super Bowl! According to one of my excellent Washington family resources, Sounds Fun Mom, this also translates into good news at a fun and educational venue, the Point Defiance Zoo and Northwest Trek. From now through February 2, "adults can save 5.00 off admission when they wear Seahawks gear, and kids get 3.00 off!" WOOHOO! Save money, learn cool new things about nature, AND celebrate the Seahawks. That sounds fun, even for those of us who are somewhat sports-fan challenged. 
And two more pieces of good news? If you are a resident of the city of Tacoma, you get several free days through the year FREE. (Click here to find out the dates and get the details) AND if you are a Pierce County resident, like me, we get discounted admission EVERY day. Very cool news indeed.
