Dad had a temper (guess I have an excuse?) and was set in his ways, that is for sure, but there was nothing in life more important to him than his family! He made sure that his kids got the college education that he had always wanted for himself. There was nothing he would not do for his kids.
With a role model like that, it just figures that there is nothing in the world I would not do for my own kids. Through thick and thin, no matter how many mistakes we made or how many times we did not listen to his advice, when the going got tough, Dad was always there.
I remember moving back to this country from Germany, after living there for 17 years. HE was the reason I moved back here with my kids. I had already been divorced for 4 years and Dad had already had two heart valve transplants with a third due that he was NOT going to get. After two 'out of body' experiences when he had died and was brought back, he was not afraid of passing on. So when he said he wanted to get to know his grandkids before he died, I moved home. You don't say NO to a good parent and he was exemplary!
He passed away July 17, 1996 - we moved back to Florida from Europe in December 1987 - the kids were too old to want to leave the life they knew here in Florida, but they did get to know my Dad! So here I am today, living the good life on the Gulf Coast of the Sunshine State. There is not a day that goes by that I do not miss my Dad. He was the best role model any kid could have. Not perfect, but human. I miss you Dad and look forward to seeing you again!
