And the Walls Came Tumbling Down...Open Concept Revisited

Everything old is new again.
Sooner or later, it all comes back, normally with a fashion-forward twist.

For clothing, it has long been my policy to pass on a trend  its second go-round if I'm old enough to remember wearing it the first time.

On HGTV, the other day, they were putting UP wallpaper.

My point? While open concept is incredibly awesome at first glance, sometimes we really do miss the room divisions.

One of my earlier posts deliberated the open kitchen concept.

 Do-you-want-an-open-kitchen-floor-plan?

It began, "In theory, I love an open floor plan. It's so light, spacious, connected - oh, just so modern!"

It's only in practice that I prefer the privacy; rooms designated for a single purpose.

Home styles average a 10 year cycle. With anything in vogue, in the beginning, it's only the most daring and adventurous that follow. Pretty soon, it's mainstream - the "everybody's doing it" phase. Towards the end, the numbers dwindle away to practically nothing. There will always be the tenacious few.

I predict the walls will start inching back up. Not all at once - just a half wall, at first - like in a breakfast bar. But they will go up, because sooner or later, the style will change.

Options are finite and walls serve a purpose:  support, privacy and protection.

Besides, what says classy and chic better than the formal dining room?

Hello Jill, Yes I have to agree with you on this subject.  Things do come back, now I wish I had some of my old cars, I would be rich.

Great photo Jill. How does that saying go, "the more things change, the more they stay the same". Sometimes that also means our tastes.

Thank you for commenting on my post.

Jill, great post and I really think that right now "anything goes" and it is wonderful to have the freedom to put walls up, take walls down, adorn with paper,  or not, and just have a beautiful living space that suits your purposes.

Good afternoon Jill. So funny and so very true. I tend to do what makes me, the pups, the bats, birds, carpenter ants, powder post beatles and the squirrels happy.

Jill,  Everything comes around doesn't it.  I love the open kitchen concept.  I don't want to be caged up like a monkey preparing for everyone else while they lounge.

Jill- very interesting!  I love open kitchens but I also love the separate dining rooms.  I say whatever makes a person's home their home... go for it.

Will - Maybe, real estate will make you rich, lol.

Joe, yes, that's what they say and it couldn't be truer. Guess that's why they say it.

Joanna - to each, his own - another popular saying.

Sheila - there you go, now you've got everyone covered.

Belinda - no one will ever put you in the corner.

Liz - thanks for taking the time to read.

Kathy - that is the bottom line, isn't it?

Interesting - I too prefer open concept living - but don't mind a huge formal dining room, not two separate living room areas - it amounts to wasted space - and I hate wasting anything. However, as many said, it's whatever works best for our individual lifestyles.  Although, I get your point - design does come and go - unless it's the little black dress. Always in vogue.

Jill: You have start into this blogging mode again because I get frustrated when I check your page and don't see anything new on it. . You are good writer and you need to utilize that talent.

BTW, style and trend, they have shelf life. I will make my decision based on functionality. Same principle goes with sartorial change.

Jill, I agree with you.  Our home is an amalgam of the open concept.  And, we have been comfortable here for over twenty years!

Debb - I actually feel the same way you do. Love the open concept AND the huge, formal dining room.

Maria - Thanks. Trying to...

Ron - what feels comfortable for you is the best way to go.

It is a hard call.  I enjoy the open plan for the ability to communicate with those in other rooms while cooking or cleaning after dinner.  However during the "formal" dinner party, I like to be able to "hide" the mess a little.  I think you also have to factor in the sizes of the rooms and how closed off they may feel.  I guess there will always be a perfect home for everyone and those "outdated" styles of that day may be what sells that out of date floor plan.  If anyone is planning a major overhaul of the home, they should be very sure they are going to be happy with it for years to come. :)

Wide open and all the areas contribute for the big feel of openness. Works well in new construction designed for it with scissor trusses, support headers and reinforcement. For older homes where one by one the inner walls are removed, Humpty Dumpty happens.

Jill, I think Joe #2 got it right, but for some of us "few" I've always liked open plans although, but still like fromal dining rooms...not much use for living room.
