And the Walls Came Tumbling Down...Open Concept Revisited
Everything old is new again.
Sooner or later, it all comes back, normally with a fashion-forward twist.
For clothing, it has long been my policy to pass on a trend its second go-round if I'm old enough to remember wearing it the first time.
On HGTV, the other day, they were putting UP wallpaper.
My point? While open concept is incredibly awesome at first glance, sometimes we really do miss the room divisions.
One of my earlier posts deliberated the open kitchen concept.
Do-you-want-an-open-kitchen-floor-plan?
It began, "In theory, I love an open floor plan. It's so light, spacious, connected - oh, just so modern!"
It's only in practice that I prefer the privacy; rooms designated for a single purpose.
Home styles average a 10 year cycle. With anything in vogue, in the beginning, it's only the most daring and adventurous that follow. Pretty soon, it's mainstream - the "everybody's doing it" phase. Towards the end, the numbers dwindle away to practically nothing. There will always be the tenacious few.
I predict the walls will start inching back up. Not all at once - just a half wall, at first - like in a breakfast bar. But they will go up, because sooner or later, the style will change.
Options are finite and walls serve a purpose: support, privacy and protection.
Besides, what says classy and chic better than the formal dining room?
