Come on, it’s only a few hours, you can wait!

I was on a plane yesterday noticing through the see through curtain the antics happening in first class, not with a sense of envy as some might, but rather with a sense of wonderment or curiosity.

Generally I look at taking a plane ride as a way to rocket myself across the country in a short time when I do not have the time to drive the distance.

I used to really enjoy these rocket rides, they can be a big thrill and it is nice to be on the other side of the country in a few hours.  But as of late, tsa has made this former fun transportation into more of a chore than a pleasure, so I have opted for a drive whenever time permits.

Yet it seems clear that some people look at transportation differently, some to eat, some to be waited on, and some I just haven’t figured out yet.

The difference between my cheapo Priceline ticket of $360 and a first class ticket is often a $300 to $700 upgrade.  This difference is what makes me wonder why people fall into this trap of very expensive cookies, wine, and a meal that sometimes falls on the floor.

By the way while entering the plane through that very narrow door at the front I had to pause for a moment when one of the flight attendants had a little accident as she frantically prepared meals for the expensive seats and one of the trays spilled on the floor and a little into the walkway.  She was a pro though and quickly picked it all back up and arraigned it on the tray before reapplying the plastic wrap.

Fortunately nobody in first class had the opportunity to see their $700 dinner hit the floor.

All of this for the short portion of the travel that is actually in flight, when the worst part of flying is sitting in those uncomfortable terminals.

The one advantage to these choice seats that often tempts me is the extra leg and seat room, both of which seem to be in short supply in the cheap seats.

There is a less expensive way around this though, talk nicely to the flight attendant, and you may just get to be that lucky fellow who flies over the wing and volunteers to pull out the window and create an exit if we should land on a patch of water somewhere.

I was happy to get two of these side by side seats on my flight from DFW to Madison today, lots of space for my legs and my backside, I even turned down the complimentary beverage as I enjoyed the extra space and a little nap time.

Waiting a few hours for a meal and a pillow did not harm me in any way, just made me appreciate what I have at home with a lovely wife ready to serve me a birthday feast and more, and it did not cost anything.

And tomorrow, I can take some of that $1400 that Nick and I saved and take my lovely bride out for a nice meal in Stevens Point, maybe even Belts Ice Cream.

Life is good!

Good morning Bob,  glad you were able to get some comfort on your flight and looking forwad to getting home and enjoying family.  I much prefer the comfort of driving but will fly when necessary.

I never understood the logic of paying so much extra for first class.  Like you, I'd rather save my money and spend it on a really nice meal at a restaurant (or stay in a nicer hotel). - Debbie

Lets shake things up at your home today!

The price of air travel is ridiculous these days and first class is hardly worth that $700 meal.  Hope you had a great birthday and dinner with your savings.

Bob, you are right, flying has become more aggravation than pleasure.  I recently flew one of the major airlines and was offered an upgrad to business class for just $135 with a "free" lunch, cheap enough to make you pause and consider.  I already had a window seat in cattle class so I declined.

Flying is more of an aggravation and certainly uncomfortable these days, although we typically use our frequent flyer miles to upgrade to first class -  not for the food, which is NOT what it used to be, but because you get on and off the plane so much more quickly and the seats are way more comfortable.

Thanks, Bob, for sharing your travel experience. I love the story about the meal dropped on the floor and then prepared for serving.

Bob, I am liking the flying experience less and less. The seats get smaller and smaller and the last couple of flights had crying babies. I felt for the moms but it sure did disturb those of us around them.

I can remember the days when I thought flying was fun, but I've had so many bad experiences flying in more recent years, that I almost loathe it.  A couple years ago I made a road trip along Utah's highway 12, which took in Zion, Bryce and Capital Reef National parks, in addition to three state parks.  I immediately began to appreciate the relaxation that road trips can offer.

I never understood the whole "first-class" thing Bob. Hope I never do. The plane takes off and lands with both classes, that extra money can be used in a much better fashion in my family.

Good morning Bob. First of all they aren't waitresses, they are flight attendants who are ready to do whatever should an emergency occur. On a long flight, there is no choice for me but business.

I'm with you, Bob. I figure that I reach my destination the same time flying coach as those in first-class. My splurges are spent in other ways.

For a couple I don't need to upgrade to first class . . . . I'll spend my money in other places.

Good luck and success.

I don't have much of a need to fly anywhere these days.  And I have to be honest, I'm not much looking forward to the next time I do have to fly after reading about all the cut backs in air travel.

Oh, Bob, how I loved this post! You have DEFINITELY been featured in Travelers in the Rain and you made a drudgery actually interesting and fun. I will be traveling across country the end of September, for the first time since '07 (!) and my husband has warned me about all of the things they DON'T do now. Yikes.

Bob, I used to travel a lot for my engineering job.  Enough that with Delta I frequently got free upgrades to those first class seats.  I'd have never been willing to pay what they want myself, but the extra room was certainly nice.  Bill

Bob, Yeah I never could understand the cost of the upgrade. Though on the international flight those seats that turn into beds do look inviting.

By the way my Sister in Law lives in Plover.
