Declutter your Phone, Tablet, or Ipad, Step 2 of the September Declutter Project

I got my first Android device a few years ago and promptly started downloading all the apps that would make me more productive, and then went to a few conventions and downloaded the apps that the speakers recommended, then downloaded a few more based on recommendations on AR and other publications.

Before long my tablet was working very slow, then it got slower still, and soon it could barely start much less be productive.

I tried deleting a few things, and found that I still had plenty of memory but something was still not working well.

In desperation, I wrote down the names of some of my favorite apps, backed up my data, and proceeded to do a factory reset.

That did the trick, but now to start over finding all of my apps, or at least the ones that I really needed.

Fortunately when I went back to the Google store I found that they not only remembered everything that I had ever downloaded, but had them in a special tab listing what was on my tablet and what was on my phone.

Just because reloading would be easy did not mean that I would be making the mistake of reloading everything.

The reload was gradual, just a few apps at a time, I wanted to find out which app was causing the problems.  And, I really did not need all of these apps anyway.

dumpstersSince this time I am very selective about which apps go onto my phone and tablet.

If I download something and it does not work well, it goes right into the dumpster.

If I go through my icons and find things that sounded like a good idea but just don't get used, then off to the dumpster they go too.

I have to remember that real estate on my devices is valuable land and it should not be wasted with every flavor of the day app that sounds good at first and really does not work or does not get used, after all these not only take up space with extra icons but they also use up memory and bandwidth.

happy decluttering!!

Hi Bob,

I think it makes sense to not go hog wild with adding apps that will never get used. your idea to try the app and deep six it if does not do something productive for you is a good one. Have a good weekend.

Smart move.  I know that Chief Cook follows this same recipe.  And, it makes her phone quicker and easier to use.

Hi Bob, I seem to have an addiction trying new apps, but never use many of them.  Sometime soon, I need to get rid of the clutter, thanks for the reminder.

I am decluttering my phone all the time.  Everytime I get an E-Mail from an agent or others it gets saved.  But after a while I just don't need it anymore and I have to thin my address book out.

Bob- I must admit to being an apps w______ but since I realized that either with Google or Apple iTunes, once you have downloaded an app, you can always download it again should you delete it, I am constantly editing what I have on my iPad and iphone.

Bob -  That can really slow you tablet down.  I used to add everything and now I resist the urge.  You can do a resore with iPad and iPhone too.  The apple store remembers.

I am having issues with my SAMSUNG Mega or what ever it is called.

When I changed phones I lost my walking app and I want that one and it is no longer available. Even though it is still working on my husbands phone which was my old one. It does not want to transfer over when we tap share apps. So your idea about going back to the Apple store for the app is great. Maybe they will let me download it unto my SAMSUG phone. All they can say is NO.

Bob~ I'm skipping this step. I just got a new laptop, so it's clean. I don't add much to my tablet or phone, so nothing useless to get rid of there!
