Paragliding at Torrey Pines

Parasailing at Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines is famous for it's World famous golf course as well as for it's famed glider port. Hang Gliding and Paragliding are two of the main activities there. There are model plane and model helicopter fliers but they tend to be out when there is less wind and when good conditions are not as favorable for Paragliding and Hang Gliding.

These sports are not for the faint of heart as you are flying off a sandstone cliff at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. What is photographed here are the 3 para gliders. Look carefully, the 3rd one can be seen up near the underside of the large sail.

While I am not a candidate to fly one these, I do enjoy watching them, especially taking off and landing. In the photo above, there are two persons flying tandem. One is the instructor and the person in front is the student. Before one flies solo there is a lot to learn. The equipment and how to use,  maneuver and care for it, understanding wind conditions and how to stay flying and ultimately learning the terrain and emergency procedures.

The Torrey Pines Glider port is open for visitors and it is always free to come and watch. I have been there when dozens of gliders are in the air at the same time and it is a fun and pleasant experience. A great way to spend a a warm sunny day in San Diego.

For all the adventurous things I've tried in life.  I still haven't found the gumption of jumping off a cliff, or out of a perfectly good airplane!

William, I've seen the place from a distance staying at a Torrey Pines hotel.  Pretty cool to watch!

Hi Noah, On Saturdays and Sundays when the conditions are good, there are many gliding and spectators to bear witness.

Hi Liz and Bill, You know just how beautiful it is to see these gliders sailing through the sky on a wind and prayer. I stick to watching.

Hi Tom, With some good instruction, they say this is pretty safe. That does have a few caveats of course, like wind sheer, wind changing direction before you can adjust your position and have some cords give way. Sort of like the feeling one would have with no brakes on a freeway. Otherwise perfectly safe.

Good morning William Johnson

Wow..... You certainly caught a great photo!  It's very common in the Albuquerque area to look up and enjoy the simple grace of hang gliders and those who are paragliding.  Not so sure I'd want to take part of these adventures but always stop and enjoy them as they slide overhead.

I can't help but remember seeing a young parasailer come into the beach for his landing and the wnd caught him and through him into a construction site where he was killed. I think they are beautiful to watch but want them to be far away from the shore.
