American Pharoah wins Kentucky Derby

"American Pharoah" wins the Kentucky Derby, known as the most exciting two minutes in sports. (His actual time was 2 minutes 3 seconds in a relaxed pace)

The Triple Crown of horse racing is a single winner for the Kentucky Derby (Churchill Downs, KY), The Preakness Stakes (at Pimlico in Baltimore) and the Belmont Stakes (in New York City).  The races are of varying lengths.  The Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 miles (first race in the Triple Crown series), The Preakness is 1 3/16 (second race in series) and the Belmont is 1.5 miles - significantly longer (the final race of the series).  The feat of a Triple Crown win has not been achieved since 1978 with "Affirmed".

Last Year, "California Chrome" won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness only to be the third place horse in the Belmont.  The first and second place horses at the Belmont were not tested in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness as they were not entered - giving rise to suggestions that "California Chrome" may have been tired after his busy racing season - and the second and first place horses were spoilers for a potential Triple Crown.

Victor Espinoza was the jockey for California Chrome last year and also for the winning horse, "American Pharoah" this year, a unique achievment.

This is the 141st Kentucky Derby.  It is said that the motion picture was created to settle the question of whether a horse completely leaves contact with the ground in full gallop (he does).  I pay attention to these races for three year olds because a number of Ocala, Florida,  horses are entered.

Meron Balkan posted the video of the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

Ted, I usually try to catch the race but missed it this year. It is exciting when we have a triple crown winner.

We don't have one yet, Mike.  Last one was 1978.

But it fun to hope -
