“I Hate Gym Class”

I was doing a mortgage application the other day and the clients brought their two young sons with them. We have two conference rooms with large tables, big enough to have the kids seated as well.

I always want to be interactive with the kids.  I may have them as clients one dayJ. As I do the mortgage application I will normally ask if the kids are paying attention, as we are going to have a quiz afterwards.

It was a bit of a challenge to engage the kids as they were involved with their video games, but at one point I asked the kids what their favorite subjects were in school. Neither was very enthusiastic about my question. So, I went in a different direction and said; I bet you guys love gym class.

Both immediately said they hated gym class. Wow how things have changed. One told me that he got an “F” last time. Not sure what “last time” means, but how do you fail gym class? I believe you pass just by showing up…

I figured it was time to stop asking the kids any questions and focus on the mortgage. It would not have been a good idea about the quiz either.

Do we have a growing problem in this country with the devices kids are using instead of getting them involved with exercise and outdoor activities?

Luckily, my grandsons aged 9 and 7, have gotten into soccer and basketball. On their own time, they go swimming several times a week. But otherwise it's all about computer games. They also like board games which is at least people interactive. But to fail gym? As a parent, I wouldn't think that was funny especially if junior lives on pizza and hamburgers and sits on his butt in front of an electronic device all day and TV at night.

Joe: Modern technology has made it very easy for kids to be lazy. Unless they get a push to go outside, many are content playing with their electronic devices.

It is interesting to watch kids in restaurants - they cannot put down their electronic devices. They don't want to get out and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air anymore and their parents don't make them.

WOW! That was an awkward experience for you with those kids inside. I guess the moral of the story is, you'll never have to worry about entertaining or involving the kids again - that is until they become adults and tell you what they do for a living. I wonder just how smart they will be and what kinds of jobs will be available for them when they reach their parents age.

Joe, I do agree, there is a problem with not enough exercise.  No wonder so many kids nowadays are overweight at such a young age.

Oh yes the times have changed. Now we have kids that are also plugged into some kind of device. They rarely even communicate with each other using their verbal skills. I guess that's the way our society is evolving.

Fact is today . . . . that the kids really don't know how to play with other kids.

Good luck and success.

It is a reflection of parenting by diversion.  Don't have to do anything but keep the kids in batteries

I had to laugh at what Ed Silva had to say. I don't think I will ever look at a baby again and not think to myself, "there goes another one, from diapers to batteries!" LOL

Wow Joe, I can understand why you reached a point where you stopped the conversation. I think some things have really changed and it is not always so good. TV and Video games are really bad for kids.

Hi Joe Petrowsky , I remember when I was in school, there were the basics,  Fall had Cross-country, football, Winter was basketball and wrestling and Spring was Baseball and Track.  Tennis and Golf were in there somewhere. Many athletic kids were in multiple sports.  That meant that the majority of the students were left out.......  Fast forward to today, Swimming, Volleyball, Soccer, have been added.  Now double all that and the girls get to participate.  There you have it.  Many more athletes, and fewer more Geeks and video-players.  You just got the non-athletic video-players.

I had bad knees and could not participte in sports of any kind. Because of that it was boring to me, I couldn't do anything.  I would have welcomed a video anything!

Yes we do Joe, the first step is for the parents to take charge and take away the video games.

The problem is iPhones or smartphones or other technologies. Nowadays kids are so absorbed into using them that they spends hours on playing online games instead of playing outside or chating with friends instead of hanging out with them. So, how can a student pass gym class if he or she are never active??
Probably parents should control more how often they use phones and computers and listen to advice from custom writing company's blogger abut explaining the importance of attending this class.
