This beautiful spot along the coastline around Hana Maui is worth a visit just to see the hot black sand washing up on smooth black pebbles at the beach. This is one of the many highlights of Hana Maui, which can easily be missed as you drive along the Hana Highway.

People may say there's nothing to do in Hana, but that's not true if you love to be in the sparkling blue sea having fun.

Waianapanapa State Park is open to the public and free, with parking, bathrooms, tables and water fountains.  Camping is popular here in the tent grounds or the cabins, with reservations.

Georgie - This is absolutely a beautiful beach. We were fortunate enough to visit there last summer with the entire family. It was our 20 year anniversary, so we went back to Maui, where we originally had our honeymoon. I absolutely love Maui.

Jennifer Provencio it's sandy and then it morphs into smooth tiny pebbles. But it gets really hot of course, being black sand.

Blacksand beaches are so mesmerizing and like almost science fiction but more beautiful in a weird paradox of a way.

The black sand makes for great photographs but I have to wonder, what causes the sand to be black? Is it from volcanoes? I don't know, but I'm curious and I know one thing for sure, I would love a nice clean beach and any beach in Hawaii!

The sand is created from the waves pulverizing the black volcanic lava rock.  It's very black here, while other beaches may have red volcanic sand, and yet other beaches will have whitish coral sand.  So many different types on one little island.

Thanks Georgie Hunter R(S). Because of you, I learned a lot today! I have never seen a black beach or red beach before. Would love to see all different types of sandy beaches at some time in my life.  This is all very fascinating to me!

You're welcome! Come on over to Hawaii and you can experience all these beaches in a few days!  Right in Hana you can find the black sand, the red sand, and a greyish sand beach.  The white and golden sands are more on the south and west shores.  It's hard to say which ones are the prettiest.
