Get Off the Fence

“It doesn’t matter which side of the fence you get off on

sometimes. What matters is getting off. You cannot

make progress without making decisions.”

Jim Rohn 1930 – 2009, American Entrepreneur, Author,

Motivational Speaker

As I see it . . . . . . .

Get off the fence

When there’s a decision that have to be made . . . . Make it and get off the fence . . . . and do what has to be done to make forward progress.

You can go into a business planning meeting . . . . and no one wants to speak up . . . .  to make a decision . . . . or put their idea on the table. They sit there in gridlock . . . . and nothing positive is happening.

They’re setting there with passive body language . . . . and avoiding eye contact because they don’t want to be asked a question . . . . Or to be asked to make a decision.

The people around the table are in fear of making a mistake. Or in presenting their viewpoint . . . . that could be difference then what’s being presented.

There is no forward progress in setting on the fence . . . . When people are not making decisions they are heading in the direction of falling off the fence . . . . and accepting other people making decisions for them.

When you give up your give up your right or ability . . . . to make decisions . . . . You surrender you future to other peoples whims.

Don’t be a fence sitter . . . Get off the fence . . . . and when a decision has to be made . . . . make it.

The fence is an uncomfortable place to be. You're right, just make a decision and move forward.

Sitting on the fence is a "decision made" you either lead, follow or get out of the way.  We wouldnt sit on the fence long if it was a picket fence :-)

people sit on the fence, being indecisive because of fear of failure, "the decisions we make determine the course of our lives and the makeup of our character" pretty scarey to be held accountable so therefore its safer to remain silent.

Keep it simple!!   To change your present situation, you MUST change inside, first.   Fear of failure or fear of success, is only a fabrication to avoid doing what must be done to move forward!!   Lack of activity, will create resentment / regrets.  You don't know what you do not know!!  Get off the fence and grow!!

Great post, Lou Ludwig.  I find most people are afraid to make a decision unless there is at least one other person justifying it for them. Even then, many will just go along...

Make the decision, own it, and move onto the next one.

I was watching a math tutor work with a student the other day. The student was drawing  a graph and had made a major mistake - one that would either necessitate starting over or erasing a lot of work and the student was grumbling. So the tutor said, "Ok, decide in 3 second whether you're going to erase or start over." And she snapped her fingers three times and counted, and by the third time, the student had decided. I thought it was brilliant - decide quickly, don't hem and haw.

Lou... great post and congrats on the feature. There's nothing that irritates me more than people who sit on the fence and can't make a decision. Right now I'm all about getting all those fence sitters thinking about buying a home to do it before prices and interest rates go up further!
