I’m taking you back to a restaurant that I featured when I first started “Foodie Friday” in 2012. The hotel this restaurant is in, according to legend, has quite a history and is known to be ‘haunted’. What an auspious place to make a reservation for this Halloween weekend. Have a spoook-tacu-lar evening if you dare!
THE DRISKILL GRILL http://www.driskillgrill.com/
The Driskill Grill is rated as one of Zagat’s top 25 hotel restaurants. Historically, it is also known as one of the most romantic spots in Austin, having been an Austin institution since 1929. President Lyndon B. Johnson took Lady Bird on their first date here in 1934. It is authentically Austin, a true dining landmark in the city.
The Driskill Grill showcases fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and game from Central Texas. They are also infamous for having one of Austin’s most diverse wine lists. They have been on the Award of Excellence list in Wine Spectator for the past 4 years with a Sommelier team that is second to none. The Driskill Grill has been honored with a AAA Four-Diamond ranking, is recognized as a top US Hotel Bar by Food & Wine magazine and one of the Top 50 Bars in the South by Garden & Gun magazine for 2 years in a row. Their bar has been host to politicians, business leaders, countless dates & Texas society drinks as well as ten-gallon hats, boots and the occasional scandal!
A sampling of their menu… for appetizers you could try the Cast Iron Seared Fois Gras with limbic pickled onions, roasted apples, saba and house made brioche or some Soft Shelled Crawfish with confit fingerling potatoes, black eyed peas, roasted corn, sweet peppers and chive butter. For an entrée there’s Seared Texas Muscovy Duck Breast with butternut squash risotto, roasted fennel, sautéed autumn greens in a Grand Marnier glaze or how about Cornmeal Dusted Gulf Red Snapper with braised collard greens, pickled winter squash and spiced nuts in a sage brown butter. Round out your meal with Apple Pie-Semi Fredo: an apple tatin and walnut cake with frozen crème fraiche parfait and vanilla bean ice cream, or try the Lemon Thyme Pear Bombe with Anjou pear jus, caramel glaze and chestnut honey.
While you’re there, walk around and enjoy the opulence and beauty of this true Texas icon with its magnificent columned lobby with marble floors and stained-glass dome. But, keep a watchful eye, you just might run into someone you weren’t planning on seeing! There is an ‘alleged’ suicide bride room and the famous Maximilian Room is also said to be haunted (around 3am). Watch this video for more on the history of the Driskill Hotel…
