Folks do and purchase some not-so-smart things and often get caught up in fads or crazes. Pet Rocks was one of them. The rocks were smooth stones supposedly from Mexico's Rosarito Beach and they were marketed as pets that did not die, need to be walked, fed, bathed and so on. They came in a carrier complete with breathing holes and were cradled in straw. A 32 page Care and Training Manual was included.
Supposedly, there were over 1.5 million sold which goes to show you, Americans will buy anything and some folks have ‘rocks in their head’. The originator of the idea made millions. Not bad money for a 6 month fad.

And that my friends, is my 2¢’s worth for this evening - M

My grandmother owned a toy store during that era.  She made a lot of money from that crazy fad!

I don't think I ever had a pet rock. I had plenty of live pets that needed lots of attention and care. The rock seems like a better idea

They were quite the rage and excellent marketing had people paying big money for a simple rock.  That and the adoption of a cabbage patch  kid

Michael

The folks who came up with pet rock made a lot of money in a very short period of time  . . .. on something that could up off the ground for free.

Good luck and success.

Good morning Michael. I thought it was stupid then and the same thing now, but I love that the free enterprise system was alive and well.

The Tonight Show had a series of items that people bought on EBay and some of the items were shocking. Someone bought a cookie that a movie star had taken a bite out of. It didn't go cheap either.
