This week in Louisville is almost bigger than Christmas. This is Derby Week in Louisville, Kentucky. The week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, which is ALWAYS held on the first Saturday in May is full of parties, celebrations of all types, and basically a week long time celebrating the Greatest 2 minutes in Sports.

The week before Derby actually starts the Saturday before Derby Day with teh Great Balloon race which typically takes off from the Kentucky Fair and Expo center in Louisville. I do not know how many Hot-Air Balloons are in the race, but it is usually between 20 & 30 balloons. This is an awesome sight to see and depending on the wind direction, you might have seen them fly over your home.

On Wednesday will be the GREAT STEAMBOAT RACE down the Ohio River between the Belle of Louisville and Delta Queen. They race from downtown Louisville, going up river to the north end of 6 mile Island, turn around and then head back south. The winner gets the bragging rights and the Guilded Antlers to display on their SteamBoat.

On Thursday of Derby week is the Derby Parade which goes down Broadway in Downtown Louisville. Like most other Parades around the USA, there are bands, floats, horses and the usuall "parade" stuff.

On Friday before the Derby is "Oaks Day" at Churchill Downs. This is typically the day that the locals (Louisvillians) attend the track to watch the horses run and especially the "Oaks Race" which is a race of only Fillies (female horses).

Then on the First Saturday in May is the Kentucky Derby. It is classified as the "Fastest Two Minutes in Sports". The Derby is attended by people from all over the world. The Queen of England was there last year, numerous celebrities, dignitaries and world leaders for around the globe.

Louisville has two airports, Standiford Field is the main International Airport and the smaller field is Bowman Field. BOTH airports will be full to the rim with airplanes. Typically they park the planes in the grass along the landing strip because there are so many planes and nowhere else to put them. Also, you can think twice about getting a hotel room, every hotel room within a 100 mile radious is usually booked solid.

If you are thinking of attending the Derby, you best make plans many months in advance.
