What ActiveRain is NOT

By
Real Estate Agent with Falcon Property Company

ActiveRain is a wonderful combination of the experienced and unseasoned, young and old, cutting edge and old school, introverts and extroverts, people who are actively involved and 'lurkers' who sit on the sidelines and absorb. It is a place to learn new ways of doing business, of finding new possibilities, of learning from the best and teaching those just starting out in business.

copyright blueWhether you are a newbie or a seasoned veteran in your real estate-related industry, there is much to learn here from your peers, and many who eagerly want to gain options for making themselves better at what they do.

Reading posts and commenting, writing posts and sharing, or asking Questions and giving Answers - those are all part of the experience of ActiveRain. It is a place to stimulate the mind into arenas you may never have thought of, to make you better than you were yesterday.

Blog posts in the Rain are a result of shared ideas, years of experience, and are unique to the author, reflecting the author's 'voice.' Depending on the person, the post could have taken hours to write or merely minutes, but it is the intellectual property of the person who wrote it.

Make no mistake - ActiveRain is NOT a place to find content you like, then copy and paste it to your own website and try to pass it off as your own. That is plagiarism (copyright infringement, theft) and can result in severe penalties, not the least of which is having your website taken down.

So if you come across something that 'speaks' to you and you want to share it, ActiveRain has a Reblog feature that allows you to post to your own ActiveRain blog. Or, if you want to share it on your personal website, you may be able to use the material, just make sure to give attribution to the real author, or rewrite the idea into your own words. DO NOT copy and paste and lead people to believe you wrote it. You may get a whole lot more than you bargained for.

It still amazes me when I hear that people have cut/pasted and entire post and pretended it was their own. They really think no one will ever find out? That's just crazy.

What really makes me scratch my head, Kat, is when they don't even change the pictures that I worked hard to make. Their cut and pastes change absolutely nothing to make it look different.

Yeah, I've been doing my own 'imbed' for years, but I'm going to bite the bullet and hire a professional - Digiprove and Copyscape are two good ones

In college, the work of choice was to copy & paste to get homework done and in. When they came out with software that tracked wording, these young kids had to go to work. So it is with us all. Do the work... reap the rewards

Didn't know you can imbed a link in Wordpress for  notification. That's a great idea, I will have to see if I can figure out how to do that. Glad it's worked for you, although it stinks your material has been stolen. Pure laziness and so wrong.

When they steal/plagiarize a blog/post or other written content, that tells me they will stop at nothing else. Also tells me they are void of any ethics and Lord help their customers/clients.

Such good information!  Reading some comments above, I see the intentional misspellings and the hidden links.  Catch some folks in the act!

Recently, I gave another PP presentation to the public and online sites are asking for my slides.  One of my mentors told me to buy the advanced version of Adobe so that I could keep folks from stealing my information.  I'm planning on doing that!  Protection is better than losing information.

There are devious people, whether newbies to Active Rain or veterans.  I'd like to hope that someone with the wisdom to be a veteran here also has the integrity to not play games.

Amazing.

Now I'm going to go look at your link to protect myself.

Thank you.

I have used Copyscape for years to detect people who have copied my content. I also keep a Change Log on my website to record new posts and changes I make to my blog or website.  It provides more evidence of when I posted the content.

I have sent copyright infringement notices to several violators.  I send the notice directly to the web host provider.  They have taken down the content or the entire website within a few days.  No legal fees, lawyer or certified mail needed.  I just send the notice by email.

I write a lot of educational articles on legal topics.  I do careful research and fact checking. My articles have attracted organic backlinks from law firms and large websites with high authority, helping my SEO rank.

I use Google Search Console to detect websites that have backlinks to my website. A proper backlink should include the title of the article or at least the keywords, not "click here".

In addition to reporting the copyright violation to the web host provider for removal, you can also report Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) violations to Google so they will remove the copied content from their search index.

See https://support.google.com/legal/answer/3110420?rd=1

Google will also report the violation to the LumenDatabase.org at Harvard University which is available to the public for research.  You can see if the violator is a repeat offender.

Great Post, activerain is an excellent community indeed and plagiarism is not a good practice at all, in fact it is a very dishonest one. For the benefit of the doubt, I think that some members don't know thjey can re-blog, i do it all the time.
