Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.
Eldred was born in San Diego, California back in 1916. His parents divorced when he was 6 and for a time was raised by his grandmother. He attended St. John’s Military Academy, while he was there his grandmother died and his father took over his upbringing. He attended San Diego High School and after graduation went on to the University of California, Berkeley. While at college he took odd jobs driving trucks for an oil company. He declared himself a pre-medical student and majored in English. He also was involved in on stage plays. Although his tuition fee was only $26.00 per year he still struggled to pay. To help himself through college he also worked as a “hasher” (kitchen help) for one of the sororities in exchange for meals.
He graduated with a BA in English and made his way to New York. He was often broke he sometimes slept in Central Park. In 1941 he got a break and was in a play just one week before the bombing at Pearl Harbor. He was exempt from military duty due to a back injury he received during his college years. And as they say the rest is history.
Oky there is a lot more I can write about Eldred but maybe you know him better as Eldred Gregory Peck. He dropped Eldred and just went with Gregory because that was also his father’s name. he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson for his lifetime humanitarian efforts. He was named as one of the Greatest Male Stars of Classic Hollywood cinema and also is noted in the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1983. He died in Los Angeles in 2003.
