Next Door Canyon Creek is utilized by many residents of the Canyon Creek neighborhood and surrounding communities to stay connected. A recent post by Suma Aithal for items needed to help a family of Syrian Refugees living in Austin produced a tidal wave of support by other residents. Lori Thompson and Leila Petratos responded quickly with items and felt compelled to offer more support.
Now the three neighbors joined forces organizing a plethora of donations to solicit for other refugee families. To their amazement one donation came in the form of a contact. Suma helped organize the family with local refugee aid services like SARA and Multicultural Refugee Coalition. Learning English and job trades for future employment is the next step helping the families to assimilate into our culture in Austin.
On Tuesday February 7, 2017 CBS aired this amazing story on the evening news!
Suma Aithal made a statement that resonates with so many residents:
“Putting humanity before everything else, stepping up to what your core beliefs are…We all need to see each other as human beings with love and respect.” Talking time to engage in meaningful activities like these are what is needed. Next Door Canyon Creek is so much more than neighbors asking for vendor trade referrals. Neighbors have a forum to inform others about events they are passionate about so like minds can come together and make things happen!
